Jonnie Irwin gave an exclusive interview from Spain, where he is vacationing with his wife Jess and their three young boys.
Jonnie, who turned 50 on Saturday, said earlier this week that he was on a trip to see beautiful sky.
Speaking from Spain, the doting dad-of-three suddenly disclosed that he’d experienced a health setback over summer and was ‘taken home to die’.
Last November, the A Place in the Sun host revealed that he had terminal cancer after a lung tumour spread to his brain.
Jonnie spent the summer in a hospice because the powerful medications he was compelled to take caused digestive issues.
Speaking about the ordeal to HELLO!, Jonnie said: ‘They sent me home to die but I slowly started to get food in me and I started to feel stronger and stronger and I had a really good summer.’
‘I feel really privileged to be able to celebrate my birthday looking at blue skies and with sand between my toes.
,’ Jonnie said of his trip to the Costa del Sol with his wife, four-year-old Rex, and twins Rafa and Cormac, three.
‘I had an early birthday party at the start of the year because I didn’t think I’d make it. It was like being at my own wake; lots of fun, lots of dancing. But here I am. I view it as a complete triumph.’
Jonnie announced his departure from the UK on Tuesday by uploading a video of himself and his family at the airport.
Jonnie – who was fresh out of hospital where he’d been receiving treatment for jaundice – told his Instagram followers: ‘I woke up this morning feeling a bit better, I’m still slightly jaundiced but I’m about to jump on a flight to southern Spain.’
He went on: ‘I did clear it with my oncologist, he said “there are hospitals in Spain and you don’t play by the rules anyway”.’
Jonnie added: ‘But my thoughts are, that’s probably part of my success so far.
‘Fingers crossed my liver continues to get a bit better. Me and family, we wake up tomorrow to blue skies in southern Spain.’
It’s nice to read that Jonnie is having a great time in the Spanish sun!
