Hayden Panettiere has revealed the physical toll her drinking took on her body.
In an interview with People last year, the Scream VI star, 33, spoke openly about her drug and alcohol addiction, claiming she believed she’d ‘reached rock bottom, but then there’s that trap door that opens’.
While battling her addiction, Panetierre gave up custody of her daughter Kaya, whom she shares with former lover Wladimir Klitschko.
In a recent interview with Women’s Health, the former Heroes actress discussed the impact her substance abuse had on her physical health after she left the spotlight.
‘I struggled with sleep deprivation. Sleep is massive. It affects your motor skills, your ability to think, and your overall health,’ she said.
The actor said that eventually, her ‘body was like, “enough”‘ as she reached 30 and had to see a liver specialist.
‘My face was swollen. I had jaundice. My eyes were yellow. I had to go to a liver specialist. I was holding on to weight that wasn’t normally there. My hair was thin and coming out in clumps,’ she continued.
It comes after the actress was spotted on her way to Good Morning America after her brother Jansen died.
On her way to the famous chat show, the Scream 4 actress, 33, was photographed wearing a tan coat with a white fur lining over a white top and black slacks.
Her face was hidden by large black sunglasses as she made her way to the set in New York City.
That comes after Panettiere, 28, was discovered dead in his New York flat on February 19.
According to a statement given by his family, the actor died of a ‘enlarged heart,’ which was confirmed by the Medical Examiner.
He was best known for roles in films such as The Fog, The Eye, The Last Days of Summer, and as Casper in hit zombie show The Walking Dead.
The family released a statement honouring the late actor, saying his ‘creative spirit will live forever in [their] hearts’.
‘Jansen’s heart could be seen in his eyes, and his charm in his brilliant, engaging smile; his soul in his masterful and revealing paintings, and the joy of life in his dry wit,’ the family told ABC News.
‘His charisma, warmth, compassion for others, and his creative spirit will live forever in our hearts and in the hearts of all whom he encountered.’
The statement went on to discuss his cause of death, stating that his’sudden death’ was caused by cardiomegaly, also known as an enlarged heart.
‘Though it offers little solace, the Medical Examiner reported Jansen’s sudden passing was due to cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), coupled with aortic valve complications,’ the family said.
‘We sincerely appreciate the outpouring of love and support towards our family as we navigate this unthinkable loss, and ask that we be gifted our privacy during this time of mourning,’ the family said. ‘We love you so much Jansen and you will be in our hearts forever.’
