Gemma Collins has recalled her relationship with James ‘Arg’ Argent, claiming she saved his life ‘three times’ at the height of his cocaine addiction.
Last year Arg sought treatment for his substance abuse – which had previously seen paramedics called to his house – and in January celebrated one year sober, having opened up on his recovery in the hopes it will keep him accountable.
Gemma and Arg first met on The Only Way Is Essex in 2011, when it debuted on our screens, and had an on/off relationship over the years before finally splitting for good last year.
Speaking to The Sunday Times, Gemma said of her ex: ‘I saved him from death three times, never got a thank you.’
When asked if she’d saved him from overdosing, she went on: ‘Loads of times.
‘I was filming Dancing on Ice and I’d had a phone call, and they said no one had been able to get hold of him. I just knew instinctively to ring an ambulance. I’d had a lovely day, all of a sudden the stomach’s churning … I arrive at Whipps Cross Hospital, see him in a state. In that room, looking at him, thinking, I’ve got to go and film again tomorrow, this is too much! The next day he’d discharged himself. Thought he doesn’t want the help.’
The GC – who revealed in the interview she was planning her wedding to partner Rami Hawash – added: ‘You can’t go out with an addict.’
Gemma previously opened up about Arg’s past addiction while giving advice to a follower, admitting it ‘ripped through her family’.
The reality star shared her advice on The Gemma Collins Podcast as she explained: ‘This is going to sound harsh but it is something I have dealt with in my life. As much as you love them, they really need help and addiction is a very serious illness.
‘I am going to tell you now, if you carry on like this, things are going to get very out of control and you are going to end up in a really distressing situation. I can speak from my heart on this one because I have been there.’
While Gemma did not mention Arg by name, she added that professional help is what is needed to deal with addiction issues: ‘People do get the right help, people do work on the steps.
‘I’ve been where you are, you want to help and you believe them but once cocaine and addiction grabs hold of someone, you are powerless to do it.
‘You are not the professional, I’ve been there myself and it’s going to really break your heart. I’ve seen it, I’ve been there, I’ve got the T-shirt and I found it too distressing and impacting on my own life.’
She added: ‘I have been in this position myself, it will destroy lives, it will rip through your family, it will rip through your friendship groups, it is a really awful situation.
‘I look back now and I did it from love but it really can break your heart in the end.’
