As the weather gets progressively warmer (and perceptively more humid in places), the easy updo becomes less of an choice and more of a necessity. Whether you have extra-long hair coming out of lockdown or you’re wearing a protective style, you need a way to pull it all back off your neck in a way that’s easy, workable with an elastic and a can of dry shampoo, and transitions seamlessly from your 11 a.m. Zoom meeting to your happy-hour drinks.
For inspiration, we’ve rounded up the pre-summer hairstyles that have already started to trend in New York and L.A. Scroll through to find five creative ways to style your hair before you get sweaty and don’t know what to do with it.
Sleek Pony
According to celebrity hairstylist Chris Georges, a polished version of a high ponytail is trending in L.A. “Not only is it stylish, but it’s also extremely convenient for running around in the heat,” he says. “Simply comb hair in an upward motion to create a sleek finish and secure the ponytail with an elastic. I like to wrap a piece of hair around the band and use hairspray — I like Unite Lé Play — to secure the wrapped piece in place.”
Topknot
Celebrity hair pro Adir Abergel recently styled Addison Rae with a high topknot, which he sees as trendy because “it’s chic and effortlessly fun,” he says. Here, digital creator Rahel Brhane shows that the higher you knot the bun, the better.
Piece-y Chignon
On the flip side, if you’re into the tight, low bun, you achieve the most stylised result by combing your baby hairs and pulling out a few strands around your ears a la model Lori Harvey.
Zig-Zag Part
Celebrity stylist Laura Polko is inspiring the zig-zag part revival. She recently styled Alexa Davis with the the throwback style, which you can get with a rattail comb to design the zig-zag, and then a claw clip to secure your bun (and keep with the ’90s aesthetic).
Pierced Braids
While mini braids are fun on their own, there’s something about a colourful accent, like model Stacey Louidor’s hair piercings, that make them feel more cheery for the summer season.
