From buzzy new ingredients like succinic acid and cica to the best hacks for combating maskne and switching up your skincare routine as a result of spending more time indoors, 2020 has brought us countless intriguing skincare trends. And 2021 promises even more.
With stress and anxiety at an all-time high, a necessary spotlight being shone on the environment, and many unforeseen changes in skin needs thanks to the pandemic, brands and skin experts are predicting a shift in the way we shop for products and look after our skin in the upcoming year.
Ahead, we enlisted three of the industry’s top beauty experts to divulge 2021’s burgeoning skincare trends and exactly how they can work for you.

Scalpcare is the New Skincare
Your scalp is just an extension of your facial skin, according to consultant dermatologist Dr Anjali Mahto, and we should be treating it in a similar way.”Partly because of COVID, people are more interested in their scalp health and body skin,” says Dr Mahto. “We know about free radical damage to the skin (for example, how UV and pollution can make skin dull and cause damage) but these things also damage the skin of the scalp and there will be an interest in maintaining scalp health.”
Dr Mahto mentions that seasonal changes and environmental pollution can make scalp issues such as dandruff, itchiness or flaky skin worse and product build-up from hairspray, serums, waxes and heat protection can also damage the scalp if not washed out properly. Dr Mahto recommends Head & Shoulders Strength Anti Dandruff Shampoo and Hair Conditioner, £4.99 each, for the ultimate cleanse.
Scalp care will also become high-tech in 2021, with some haircare lines formulating products with hyaluronic acid, which they claim can help protect the hair against ageing. Head & Shoulders, meanwhile, incorporates lactic acid into its Strength line to exfoliate dry skin.

A Focus on Eye Care
With protective face masks covering everything apart from the eyes, it’s no wonder more of us have become aware of dark circles, puffiness and fine lines. Indie Lee, beauty expert and founder of skincare brand Indie Lee, hits home the importance of two ingredients in particular when shopping for eye creams and serums. “I love using arnica (which is said to treat swelling and therefore eye bags), and vitamin E around the eyes,” says Indie. “Vitamin E in particular is so moisturising. Prior to using skincare products with vitamin E in them, I used to buy supplement capsules and use them on my skin at night. I still do that when my eyes are really dry and I need a surge.”Eye creams are great but Indie suggests using an eye serum, as they are more potent. Try the I-Waken Eye Serum, £48. “This addresses dark circles, fine lines and puffiness,” says Indie. R29 also recommends Olay Regenerist Eye Cream Advanced Anti-Ageing Eye Lifting Serum, £21.69, and No7 Youthful Eye Serum, £20, for deeply hydrating dry under-eyes and minimising fine lines over time.

Streamlined Skincare
Dr Mahto rates Dr Sam’s Flawless Brightly Serum, £44, which combines azelaic acid for gentle exfoliation, bakuchiol (nature’s answer to retinol, which uncovers brighter skin cells) and niacinamide for reducing oil and the appearance of enlarged pores.
We recommend StriVectin Super-C Retinol Brighten and Correct Vitamin C Serum, £62, and Paula’s Choice Clinical 0.3% Retinol + 2% Bakuchiol Treatment, £53, both of which are excellent at combating dull skin prone to hyperpigmentation and dark spots.
Dr Mahto’s advice? Start slowly and build up your skin’s tolerance, as ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C and acids can be irritating when used too often. As a result, SPF is a must.

Skincare as Selfcare
If you’re stressed, you’re probably not sleeping or eating properly, adds Indie, and this can show up on your skin. “In terms of combating that, meditating, yoga and finding something to help ground myself works. Be sure to eat a healthy, balanced diet and get enough sleep. I like aromatherapy and find lavender is very grounding; it helps me get to that restful place.”
Alexia pinpoints trailblazers like Rahua, Therapie, Earl of East, Odacité and De Mamiel among brands countering the many nuanced forms of anxiety with essential oils, salts and satisfying textures. “Ritualistic acts of beauty take up a more ‘conscious’ place within our lives – occupying the wellbeing space just as much as a beauty one,” says Alexia.

The Smartest New Skincare Ingredients
Ingredients derived from the ocean are also going to be huge. “The beauty world has been obsessed with the power of plants,” says Alexia, “but it is casting its net wider. As the sustainability movement focuses more on ocean preservation, sea botanicals are searching for the sunlight, and ocean plants and ocean sustainability programmes are gaining traction as a largely untapped cache of beauty treasures.”
Ingredients like sea plasma, marine collagen, algae, astaxanthin, microorganisms and others are making their way into skincare to hydrate, plump and soothe skin. Brands like One Ocean Beauty, Haeckels and Elemis are already jumping on board.
