The BBC has confirmed Richard Osman will be replaced by a roster of guest presenters, who will job share as Alexander Armstrong’s ‘Pointless friend’ on the teatime quiz show.
Richard announced his exit from Pointless after over a decade in the hot seat, in order to focus on his career as a writer.
While he will continue in his role for Pointless Celebrity specials, for now, he will soon wave goodbye to the position on the main show.
With speculation having built over who his replacement might be, the broadcaster has revealed he will actually have more than just the one.
In fact, there will be much-loved six stars who will rotate the slot.
Among the names are former Coronation Street actress Sally Lindsay, ex-Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq and TV presenter Lauren Laverne.
Comedians Alex Brooker, Ed Gamble, and The Split star Stephen Mangan will also take it in turns to co-host alongside Alexander.
Reacting to the news, the show’s main presenter said: ‘This is going to be such a ride! Richard will still be in once a week on Saturdays to make sure everything’s ticking over nicely, but otherwise, it’s just me bringing new Pointless friends in and showing them the ropes.
‘Loads of new and fun personalities on the desk next to me. I can’t wait.’
Sally also expressed her excitement, sharing: ‘As everyone knows I love a game show and being asked to sit in Richard Osman’s hallowed chair is beyond thrilling! Can’t wait to be “Pointless”!’
Stephen added: ‘I am incredibly excited to be joining my old friend Xander on such an iconic show. What could possibly go wrong?’
Back in April, Richard announced he would be stepping down from his role on Pointless later this year.
Richard said: ‘Pointless has been a joy from start to finish, working alongside my friend Alexander Armstrong, backed by the most wonderful team, and for the best viewers in the world.
‘I will miss everyone so much, but I’m thrilled that I’ll still be presenting the celebrity shows. I can’t thank everyone enough for twelve amazing years.’
Luckily, fans will still be able to watch him on the specials, as well as his BBC Two gameshow, Richard Osman’s House Of Games.
The Thursday Murder Club author recently confirmed his engagement to girlfriend Ingrid Oliver, who has starred in Doctor Who.
In an interview with The Observer, he was quizzed about rumours he was set to wed, confirming: ‘Yes,’ and adding: ‘Exciting, isn’t it?’
Ingrid moved into Richard’s London home last year after the pair reportedly started dating following a summer 2020 dinner party.
Pointless airs weekdays from 5.15pm on BBC One.
