A brand new Apple TV+ series called Prehistoric Planet led by Sir David Attenborough launches on May 23, introducing viewers to an immersive look at Earth’s amazing habitats from millions of years ago (66 million, to be exact) and the dinosaurs that roamed in them.
For decades, Sir David – who has just been named Champion of the Earth by the United Nations – has taught audiences about everything from sea life to the polar regions of the world and above and beyond, and now he’s going back by quite a stretch to reveal more about dinosaurs and the world they inhabited.
Prehistoric Planet uses state-of-the-art technology and scientific research to transport viewers to the ancient world for a ‘story you have never heard, on a scale you have never witnessed,’ according to Sir David in the series’ early trailer.
Here’s what we know about the series:
What is Prehistoric Planet about?
Produced by BBC Studios, the new Apple TV Plus programme will be narrated by world-renowned conservationist, presenter, narrator, and author Sir David Attenborough, 95, executively produced by Jon Favreau (actor, director and creator of The Mandalorian), and with an original score by Hans Zimmer, Prehistoric Planet promises to be quite the TV event.
It follows computer-generated dinosaurs in the Late Cretaceous period (66 million years ago) and is described as a ‘one-of-a-kind immersive experience’, featuring a range of species including the ‘eye-opening parenting techniques of the Tyrannosaurus rex.’
The five-part ‘enthralling exploration of ancient earth’ documentary series also explores the depths of the oceans as well as ‘deadly dangers in the sky.’
Where can I watch Prehistoric Planet?
The first episode of Prehistoric Planet will be available to stream on Apple TV Plus from Monday May 23. A new episode will be released each day in a five-day event between Monday to Friday, May 23 – 27.
If you’re not yet a subscriber, you can sign up for Apple TV Plus for £4.99 a month in the UK – and there’s also the option of a one-week free trial.
This is the second Attenborough programme on Dinosaurs this year, following Attenborough’s BBC One programme Dinosaurs: The Final Day, set to air later this year.
Is there a trailer?
Just released, the trailer gives a glimpse of what Apple describes as ‘little-known and surprising facts of dinosaur life set against the backdrop of the environments of Cretaceous times, including coasts, deserts, freshwater, ice worlds and forests.’
‘From revealing eye-opening parenting techniques of Tyrannosaurus rex to exploring the mysterious depths of the oceans and the deadly dangers in the sky, Prehistoric Planet brings Earth’s history to life like never before.’
