Zoë Kravitz revealed she felt a ‘little uncomfortable’ filming Big Little Lies in a predominantly ‘white’ area.
The 33-year-old actress starred in the HBO thriller – which focused on three suburban mothers with first grade children, who find themselves embroiled in a murder investigation – alongside Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern and Shailene Woodley.
The hit mystery drama was filmed in Monterey, California during the show’s two-year run, however The Batman star didn’t feel at ease in her surroundings at the time.
Speaking about her experience on set, she told The Observer: ‘There were a few moments where I felt a little uncomfortable because it is such a white area.’
‘Just weird racist people in bars and things like that,’ she added.
Big Little Lies, which ran for two seasons from 2017 to 2019, faced backlash after fans noticed Zoë’s character, Bonnie Howard Carlson, was the only person of colour out of the whole cast.
Although Bonnie was ‘originally written for a white person,’ according to Zoë, she praised the show for not making her ethnicity ‘a thing.’
Zoe, who stars opposite Robert Pattinson as Catwoman in The Batman, recently revealed how far she threw herself into playing the iconic superhero.
While joking about ways he would have prepared for the role of Catwoman, host Jimmy Fallon claimed he would ‘study cats’ and ‘drink milk out of a bowl.’
Zoe confessed ‘I did that,’ to which Jimmy quipped, ‘You did not!’
The actress then insisted: ‘I did.’
Stunned, Jimmy replied: ‘You drank milk out of a bowl?’
Zoe teased ‘maybe,’ before adding: ‘I’m method, dude!’
While we can’t say Zoe’s, ahem, extra research contributed to the film’s success, the action-adventure film has become the second biggest pandemic-era debut nonetheless, after it earned $128million (£97.2m) at the domestic box office in the US just four days after its release.
