The past few months have spoiled musicals lovers with the release of Spielberg’s take on West Side Story and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s adaptation of tick, tick… BOOM! – and Peter Dinklage in Cyrano provides another sweet treat for those fans, although it’s a shade less satisfying.
After being pulled from its delayed January release slot with just a week to go after another Covid wobble (and with a fair amount of press already done), Cyrano finally arrives with a French(ish) flourish in cinemas this Friday.
Based on the 2018 stage musical of the same name, co-incidentally written by its star Peter Dinklage’s wife Erica Schmidt, which is itself based on the 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, the story is one that most people are at least vaguely familiar with.
Too self-conscious to woo the beautiful Roxanne (Hayley Bennett) himself, wordsmith Cyrano de Bergerac (Dinklage) helps young Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr), a new cadet in his regiment, to steal her heart through love letters.
Cyrano’s success really does hinge on Dinklage’s central performance, and we already know he excels at tortured witticism from his career-making performance as Tyrion Lannister in Game Of Thrones.
It’s not much of a challenge for the actor, but he does it so well it would seem churlish to criticise. His perfect casting might not quite stretch to a stunning singing voice (especially in an early rap portion), but he sells what he has pretty convincingly through his spoken singing.
