With countless skincare routines plastered all over Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, getting to grips with what your skin needs can feel daunting.
While some people could fill a book with their list of daily skincare products, others opt for a more minimalistic approach.
Double cleaning is a skincare technique that is said to offer a deeper cleanse while keeping breakouts at bay and brightening your skin in the process.
It involves using two cleansing products one after the other in the morning and evening.
The idea is to use two different types of cleansers: an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser.
‘An oil-based cleanser removes oily makeup, sunscreen, sebum, and pollution more effectively than a water-based cleanser,’ Dr Sasha Dhoat, consultant dermatologist at Stratum Clinics, tells Metro.co.uk.
‘So once the oil-based cleanser has done its job in removing the oily debris, the second water-based cleanser can penetrate more easily in the skin pores and perform its job.’
What are the benefits of double cleansing?
According to Lizzie Shaw, a brand manager for PCA Skin, double cleansing can help to brighten the skin, keep breakouts under control and assist with anti-aging.
‘While double cleansing might seem unnatural or an extra level of effort to add to your skincare routine, it’s important to invest time into your skincare,’ she says.
‘Plus, it’s a really straightforward process.’
Double cleansing can also be great for breaking down and removing makeup, adds Dr Dhoat.
Who should double cleanse?
Double cleansing definitely sounds like a valuable skincare technique, but is it for everyone?
According to Dr Dhoat, people with normal or dry skin should steer clear from double cleansing.
‘For most people with normal or dry skin, double cleansing can actually do more damage to the skin barrier than good, as with all over washing,’ she says.
This is because over-washing can cause drying, redness and flaking.
However, she adds, for people with oily skin – or for people who wear heavy makeup day-to-day, double cleansing can be beneficial.
How to double cleanse
Step 1: Used an oil-based cleanser to remove impurities like makeup and SPF
Step 2: Used a water-based cleanser for a deeper cleanse, gently massaging into the skin
Step 3: Rinse with lukewarm water using a face cloth
Step 4: Pat dry, finishing your routine with a serum and moisturiser
