A Deal or No Deal player with a terminal illness has left viewers in tears after winning only £5.
Contestant Brad confessed to presenter Stephen Mulhern on the most recent edition of the revamped game show that he had received a fatal prognosis last year.
After Brad asked what he would do with any prize money, the player revealed why he was hurrying to finish his ‘bucket list’ things.
‘Well last year things changed quite a lot for me really and I was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (MND),’ he said as he started to tear up.
‘The prognosis isn’t really that great.
‘So, I would put it towards things on my bucket list and go and see different places around the world and give my family and partner some money.’
Stephen inquired about Brad’s bucket list intentions and whether he had been assigned a time constraint.
‘Inevitably that is how it goes, but don’t get me wrong, Stephen Hawking lived 55 years however the average is a few years.’
As Brad delivered his experience, the camera turned to some of the other contenders, many of whom were weeping and wiping away tears.
Brad added that after being informed he would die in a few years, he ‘sort of gave up’ and was depressed for a few months.
‘But then I woke up this morning and thought “sod this” and I knew I needed to change the way I was thinking and feeling about things and since I’ve got into that mindset I’ve never been happier because it’s made me realise that things that actually matter, all the stuff I used to care about before, they mean nothing and it’s living life and experiences like this that means something,’ he added.
Brad stated that he was now more accepting of himself and felt ‘good enough’ after the diagnosis.
But, at the conclusion of the show, Brad was in tears since the prize pool had dropped and the banker had only awarded him £5.
Brad approached to his mother in the audience just before the last round for guidance, and both agreed he should go on because his luck had been excellent thus far.
However, things did not go as planned, and his hopes of walking away with £75,000 were dashed.
Brad was left with four boxes to open, which comprised the £75,000, £5,000, £10, and £5 prizes. He was devastated when he was left with only the £10 and £5 boxes in play.
He told Stephen: ‘This is my life. I’ve always had such bad luck. Nothing changes, I should have expected this.’
Brad ended up with £5 after sticking with the box he chose at the beginning of the game.
Despite the heartbreaking outcome, Brad expressed gratitude to Stephen, the team, and his other participants, saying it had been ‘wonderful’ to meet them all.
Many viewers also expressed their devastation at what unfolded, with many calling it ‘gut-wrenching’, ‘heartbreaking’, and sharing they’d been ‘left in tears’.
‘Brad deserved so much more. Really unlucky guy I hope his life goes better in the future,’ one person posted on X, formerly Twitter.
‘Felt so sorry for Brad such a wonderful man made me cry when he said all he’s had is bad luck though his life,’ someone else shared.
Another added: ‘I’m a wreck after Deal or No Deal today. What a lovely man Brad is and how cruel was his game. Wish I had £75,000 I’d love to make his dream come true.’
Deal or No Deal airs weekdays from 4pm on ITV1.
