Everyone may exhale a sigh of relief: your fave programme about young girls devouring each other in the woods has returned.
Season 2 of Yellowjackets has arrived, and the stakes have been significantly raised.
Supernatural occurrences? Check. Time-jumping? Check. Cult leaders in masks and antlers? Check. A knockout soundtrack? Check again.
To recap in two sentences: season one introduced us to a girls’ high school football team whose plane crashes on way to the 1996 national championships. The following ten episodes alternate between the girls’ blood-splattered fight for survival in America’s backwoods and their present-day selves: all grown up but still suffering from their time trapped and on the verge of death.
Although there are murmurs – or in some cases, large, broad strokes – of cannibalism, murder, and magic in the show’s opening chapter, there were still fistfuls of loose ends to be knotted by the time it finished.
Season two is here.
The first six episodes are oozing with the gore, blackmail, and intrigue that made the original Yellowjackets so compelling – but the second cycle is substantially heightened.
The subtleties of each character, both teenage and adult, have risen to the surface this time around.
Adult Natalie, played by super badass Juliette Lewis, now has a significant collection of peculiarities in common with her younger self, played by Sophie Thatcher (who is also a great badass, FYI).
While the similarities between the teen and adult versions of Misty (played by Samantha Hanratty and Christina Ricci, respectively) have always been more superficial, creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson have coaxed out more likeable traits in adult Misty this time around, making her teen self a tad less hateable.
Meanwhile, Shauna has established herself as the show’s most multidimensional character.
Melanie Lynskey plays teenage Shauna in the current day, with Sophie Nélisse playing the character in the 1990s, and the aftershock becomes increasingly apparent in flash forwards.
Also, Elijah Wood has joined the cast (love him!).
His character Walter is a mischievous online detective who’s hellbent on impressing Misty, and after just a few scenes, it’s difficult to envision the show without him.
With each episode, the past and present get closer and closer, eventually merging into a large, scary ball of mayhem. The deeper you go, the more you desire.
Prepare for surprising resurrections from the dead, heart-pounding relationship unraveling, and, of course, a dash of stomach-turning cannibalism. We used the ‘C’ word there.
Season two, on the other hand, is a deliciously brazen reminder that being a young girl is a murderous business.
