Worzel Gummidge actor Mackenzie Crook hopes new special Saucy Nancy will be a tribute to the late, great Dame Barbara Windsor.
The BBC series will return this Christmas, with Harry Potter actress Shirley Henderson taking over the naughty role made famous by Babs, who died on December 10, back in 1980.
Following the sad news that she had died of dementia, Mackenzie said that he hopes the new version will honour her memory.
‘Absolutely, yes,’ he told The Sun.
‘She played the original version and a lot of people will remember that fondly.
‘It’s so sad that she died just weeks before our new one went out.’
Saucy Nancy is as rude as she sounds, with Worzel and his pals finding her in a scrapyard after she was thrown out after being a ship figurehead.
Helping her out, the team head out on a mission to get her back to the sea where she belongs.
However, that doesn’t come without its trouble, with Nancy’s foul language making her chaos to be around.
‘They sound like they might be rude but they’re not,’ Mackenzie, who also wrote the show, joked. ‘You should try it.
‘Try writing a list of good swear words. They have to sound right. “Pipe scrape, you filthy pipe scrape”. Something about that sounds almost rude, something vaguely anatomical.’
Dame Barbara died at the age of 83 after a long battle against dementia.
Her funeral is set to be held in January.
Among those speaking at her funeral is Sir Christopher Biggins, and Ross Kemp, who played on EastEnders son, Grant Mitchell.
The actress, best known for playing Peggy Mitchell on the BBC soap, is survived by her husband Scott Mitchell.
