This month, as the 2023 grand final approaches, Love Island has attracted a slew of complaints, with over 300 from fans alleging abuse directed towards Ron Hall.
There are only a few days until host Maya Jama crowns the winners of the winter ITV2 competition, with couples such as Jessie Wynter and Will Young and Tanya Manhenga and Shaq Muhammad still in the race.
While the programme is coming to an end, some features of recent episodes have irritated fans, prompting many to protest to media watchdog Ofcom.
The programme received 151 complaints on Wednesday, March 1, followed by 71 complaints on Thursday, March 2, 245 complaints on Sunday, March 5, and 57 complaints on Monday, March 6.
Ofcom has stated that complaints lodged to the watchdog based on viewers’ opinions are not indicative of an investigation.
It is reported that the complaints filed on March 5 and 6, totaling 302, addressed alleged bullying of Ron by other candidates in the villa.
On March 1, fans were alleged to have filed 99 complaints after discarded pair Olivia Hawkins and Maxwell Samuda were granted the ability to pick another couple to banish from the show.
Another 47 complaints are said to have been made about Olivia’s behaviour during that day’s transmission, while on March 2, complaints are known to have been made about how Tom Clare was handled by his fellow candidates.
During the weekend, Ron was accused of playing a game in the villa when he informed some of his fellow islanders, ‘When I was a viewer… I thought, the ones who have their drama nice and early and then get comfy and treat it like a holiday, they’re the ones who are probably like, they just cruise.
‘I can see why people probably thought, “Oh Lana and Ron are just cruising through”. I’m not bothered by any of that. As I know I’m not, otherwise I never would have made her my girlfriend, it means too much to me.’
The next day, when Tom told the other participants of Ron’s “game plan,” the financial adviser had some damage control to perform, telling Samie Elishi that he was “livid” about the accusations.
‘I’m not going to lie, I’m quite livid, I’m just not going to have it… I’m not having a whole gaff think that after one challenge I’m playing a game,’ he told the senior estate agent coordinator.
Tonight, the Love Island contestants will confront one of the series’ most memorable tasks when they are faced with caring for plastic infants.
Love Island returns tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
