Will there be a Stranger Things season 5?

Although Stranger Things fans may be excited about the new series airing today, it’s not long before we’ll have to say goodbye to some of our favourite characters, as the show’s creators have revealed when it will be coming to an end.

This season promises to be the most bizarre yet and is ‘out of this world’, as the thrilling sci-fi series will follow a new ‘war’ for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and the rest of the Hawkins gang, and, nearly three years since the last season, this time around it looks to be just as scary as we’d expect, with a new gruesome villain known as Vecna.

Although we’re not giving any spoilers away for where the season will go, it’s bound to be action-packed, and is actually the longest yet, despite being penultimate season of the show, as The Duffer Brothers, who created the hit Netflix series, revealed in February this year.

In an open letter to fans, the Duffer Brothers confirmed last month that there will be a fifth chapter, but it will mark the end of the saga, with the upcoming fourth instalment airing in two parts.

They shared: ‘With nine scripts, over 800 pages and almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots, and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, Stranger Things 4 was the most challenging season yet, but also the most rewarding one.

‘Everyone involved is incredibly proud of the results, and we can’t wait to share it with you.’

They added: ‘Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things. At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons.

‘It proved too large to tell in four, but – as you’ll soon see for yourselves – we are now hurtling toward our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last.’

The brothers teased ‘many more exciting stories to tell’ as well as ‘new unexpected heroes.

‘First, we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a ferocious mom, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down.

‘As always, we’re grateful for your patience and support,’ they concluded.

Weighing in on the decision to bring the sci-fi drama to an end, executive producer Shawn Levy said the team behind the show didn’t want to go beyond the arc that had been originally mapped out.

‘Well, we never wanted to run on fumes and we wanted to only tell as much story as the brothers saw and feel with clarity,’ he explained.

‘So it’s been clear for a while that they know exactly where we’re headed and this is the arc.

‘We wouldn’t want to stick around for one moment beyond that vision and the clarity of that voice.

‘So rather than focusing on that sad day that happens who knows when, the end of season five, I’ll just once again reaffirm what I’ve told everyone, which is it has been a long-ass wait for season four. But I swear to God, the world will realise it’s worth it.’

Stranger Things season 4 part 1 will be available to stream on Netflix from Friday, May 27.
