One of the most pressing concerns about the third season of The Mandalorian, starring Pedro Pascal, was how the disappearance of Cara Dune would be explained (Gina Carano).

The actress was sacked from the show after making her final appearance as the role in season 2, having previously joined the cast in 2019.

With the debut of the third season on Disney Plus, fans questioned if the tale will just sweep Cara under the rug or make some reference to her.

So, why did Gina, 40, have to resign from her position in the first place?

Here’s the rundown.

Why is Gina Carano not in The Mandalorian season 3?

Gina made her final appearance in The Mandalorian in December 2020, when she repeated her character in the show’s second season till the end.

In early 2021, the former MMA fighter faced widespread condemnation for making ‘abhorrent and reprehensible’ social media postings equating Republican government to Nazi Germany and the Holocaust.

Gina’s departure from the post was announced in a statement published by Lucasfilm in 2021.

‘Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and has no intentions to be in the future,’ the statement said.

‘Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.’

Gina’s talent agency, UTA, was reportedly believed to have dismissed her at the time.

Gina’s alleged now-deleted tweet was believed to have read: ‘Jewish were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbours…. even by children.

‘Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews.

‘How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?’

Gina had previously been chastised for making fun of people who used face masks to protect themselves during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The Deadpool actor is also said to have supported fraudulent charges of voter fraud during the US presidential election.

Will Cara Dune be recast?

Following Gina’s departure, it was stated that those in control of The Mandalorian had no plans to recast Cara.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a source at Lucasfilm claimed that recasting was unlikely.

Still, fans of the programme speculated about prospective successors, with names like Lucy Lawless, Lana Parrilla, and Ember Moon tossed into the mix.

The Mandalorian director Rick Famuyiwa previously stated that despite Gina’s departure, Cara will still be featured into the programme.

‘Cara was a big part and continues as a character to be part of the world. It had to be addressed in the creative and [Jon Favreau] took the time to think about that,’ Rick told Deadline, having directed episodes one, seven and eight of the third season.

‘It was something that was discussed as we knew it was going to have impact on the show, but at the same time, what has been at the heart of the show are the two characters – Din Djarin and Grogu – so ultimately it felt like a servicing of that, and around the Mandalorians.’

The Mandalorian is available to watch on Disney Plus, with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
