In October last year, former escapologist and daredevil Jonathan Goodwin – who made it to the finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2019 and America’s Got Talent a year later – suffered an accident that left him paralysed.
The accident occurred while he was rehearsing for a stunt, with his partner, actor Amanda Abbington recently revealing the extent of his injuries.
While speaking on the Out To Lunch podcast with Jay Rayner, Amanda explained that Jonathan, 42, suffered ‘third degree burns, broke his spine and severed his spinal cord’ adding that he ‘nearly died’ in the aftermath, with the surgery he required also proving life-threatening.
The couple recently made a joint TV appearance, where they became emotional as they opened up about what they said to one another after the life-changing incident.
Amanda said that they are ‘closer and tighter than ever’, explaining how they share an ‘unspoken thing’ and describing every day that they spend together as a ‘joy’.
Who is Amanda Abbington?
Amanda, 48, who was born an only child in Hertfordshire, is best known for starring as Miss Mardle in Mr Selfridge, the ITV series about Harry Gordon Selfridge and the creation of Selfridges, and Mary Watson in the BBC’s Sherlock.
She also appeared as several different characters in The Bill throughout the years, as well as starring in programmes including The Sins, Teachers, Casualty, I Hate Suzie and Doc Martin and plays such as God of Carnage, God Bless the Child and The Son.
In 2014, she won the best supporting actress award at the Crime Thriller Awards for her performance in Sherlock.
Amanda was previously in a long-term relationship to The Office actor Martin Freeman, having met on the set of the 2000 film Men Only.
The former couple have two children together, and were together for 16 years until their separation in 2016.
They acted alongside each other several times, including in Sherlock, The Debt and the Robinsons.
Is she married to Jonathan Goodwin?
Amanda and Jonathan are currently engaged.
The pair were social media friends for a decade, but only got together after she separated from The Hobbit star Martin in 2016, and he and his wife were divorced.
Amanda first came across Jonathan because her son Joe – one of two that she has with Martin – found his escapology escapades ‘amazing’.
They were friends for a decade before becoming romantically involved, during which time they would spend hours speaking to each other on the phone, Amanda said.
They met for the first time in Vienna, when Jonathan flew out to finally meet her in person.
During their first meeting, Jonathan proposed within half an hour, with their nuptials set to take place this summer.
In February this year, Jonathan finally left hospital five months after his accident, which resulted in his being airlifted to a critical care unit and taken to a trauma unit for surgery.
Amanda recalled her partner sending her a voice note before his surgery, when he told her that there was a 50% chance that he wouldn’t make it, that he loved her and thanked her for the months they’d spent together.
During a recent interview on Lorraine, Jonathan revealed that he told Amanda she could walk away from their relationship after his accident.
‘I did say, “You have a get out of jail free card – if you want to walk away, then I completely understand,” and she told me not to be so stupid and that was that,’ he said.
