This is only one of many barbed observations on this sharply noticed black comedy from Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who writes, directs and stars as LA instructor Josh Corman, whom we meet mid-existential disaster as he realises that his life hasn’t labored out fairly how he thought it will.
It’s not an authentic premise however Gordon-Levitt is such a likeable presence that he turns a personality who might have come off as a whiny loser into a man we really root for.

This is a tough-as-old-boots old-school thriller filled with stubbly bloke detectives in sun shades trying moodily on the panorama (Bulgaria’s Rhodope mountains are an impressive backdrop) whereas a kick-ass feminine associate (Teodora Duhovnikova) forces confessions out of suspects in again alleys.
Grimly fascinating and the Bulgarian setting provides it an unique twist.
