What is a USP in business?

Fans of The Apprentice saw dessert shop owner Harpreet Kaur win Lord Alan Sugar’s £250,000 investment in this year’s final, as she beat out Kathryn Burn for the top prize.

The two finalists went head to head as they launched their businesses in just three days, in the hope of impressing Lord Sugar and his advisors.

But when weighing up the two competing businesses, Lord Sugar had to consider a few factors. One question he had for the candidates was about their business’ USP.

But what does USP stand for and what does it mean in business?

What does USP mean?

USP is an abbreviation that stands for ‘unique selling point’.

A USP is something that makes a product, service or business different from its competitors. It is a reason for a consumer to choose a particular product or service over another.

In The Apprentice final, finalist Kathryn Burn explained that the USP of her matching pyjamas business is that they create matching pyjamas for dogs, unlike her competitors.
