What happened in BBC series The Tourist season one?

The BBC’s compelling drama thriller The Tourist returns after a two-year hiatus — but how did season one end?

At the start of the episode, we met Jamie Dornan’s character Elliot, who wakes up in the Australian outback with no recollection.

A vehicle drove him off the road, but Eliot has no memory of what occurred, who he is, or why he was there – and while he attempts to solve these enormous mysteries, he learns that people are attempting to murder him everywhere he goes.

He meets police officer Helen Chambers, played by Danielle Macdonald, who is in an unpleasant relationship with domineering Ethan Krum (Greg Larsen), while in hospital with acute amnesia.

Elliot ultimately learns his name thanks to Luci, who he later discovers is his ex-girlfriend as well as the fiancée of a druglord who also happens to be his boss. Yikes.

Elliot turns out to be the former accountant of international criminal Kostas, and he and Luci escaped with $1 million in stolen money.

In order to piece things together and escape being killed by Kostas’ hounds looking for the money, he ends up taking Helen hostage – but they end up becoming close.

Kostas is shot and killed by a shady officer named Lachlan, and Luci is slain in the process.

Lachlan suspects Elliot and Helen for the crime, but they clear their identities and he is jailed.

Helen, of course, exits her domineering relationship.

Meanwhile, Elliot searches for what he believes to be the final missing piece of the puzzle: Lena Pascal, a mystery lady about whom he has visions.

She told Elliot that he had previously trafficked her and other women into Australia, sneaked sachets of heroin into their stomachs.

Lena also informed Elliot that he had murdered two ladies when the bags detonated in their tummies.

Elliot then attempts suicide but wakes up in the hospital, by which time Helen has learned about his heinous background and quickly abandons him.

With no hope and no Helen, Elliot prepared to commit suicide once more by drinking a bottle of vodka and eating a handful of pills.

While he waits to die, he receives a message from Helen that contains only an emoji of a taco.

This, she had already informed him, meant that everything would be well.

Cliffhanger alert…

All 6 episodes of The Tourist season 2 are available to watch now on BBC iPlayer, and the first episode will air on BBC One at 9pm on January 1.
