Westworld season 4 trailer: Thandiwe Newton and Evan Rachel Wood return in disturbing and mystifying first look

Westworld is in for a chilling return, and if the season 4 trailer is anything to go by, it’s going to be more harrowing than ever before.

Having first premiered in 2016 and starring a cast including Thandiwe Newton, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright and Luke Hemsworth, the HBO sci-fi series began in a theme park where guests were able to do whatever they pleased to the humanoid robots, who were there to indulge them.

By the third season, the show had transitioned to the real world in the 21st century, when an artificial intelligence called Rehoboam is seemingly able to predict people’s futures.

The trailer for the upcoming new episodes – which is set to Lou Reed’s Perfect Day – opens with Maeve (Thandiwe), a host who became self-aware, walking across a dry, deserted landscape.

The scene then transitions to former soldier Caleb (Aaron Paul), who’s sitting with his legs dangling off a mirrored skyscraper, coolly sipping from a drink while taking in the view.

Ashley Stubbs (Luke), Westworld’s Head of Security, looks shocked as he spots the Man in Black (Ed Harris) across a busy street, before Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood), who was a host in the park, walks up some stairs, looking over her shoulder in an intriguing manner.

She’s later shown in a bar, looking as though she’s just spotted someone who she recognises.

In another scene, Caleb and Maeve are together in an empty auditorium, approaching a phonograph on the stage as a ‘welcome’ message flashes in front of them.

Jeffrey, who stars as Westworld’s Head of the Programming Division Bernard Lowe, is seen in what appears to be a dreamlike state, looking up at a tree as it sets on fire.

Meanwhile, Tessa Thompson who plays Charlotte Hale, Executive Director of the Delos Destinations Board, is seen standing in the middle of a crowd of dancing civilians, putting a finger to her lips as a sign to be quiet.

For anyone who becomes squeamish at the sight of insects, they might not like what’s coming, with one shot showing a swarm of them in a room and another showing flies coming out of a robot child’s face.

Near the end of the trailer, things speed up as various shots are shown in quick succession after one another, as Bernard is shown lying in a pool of blood, Caleb is seen screaming and crawling on the ground and a skeleton is shown looking as though it’s being constructed by a machine.

In February this year, James Bond star Jeffrey teased what was to come in season four, saying that it’s ‘going to be more of the Westworld you’ve come to expect and more digging down into some issues and some technology that is going to look familiar to us, as always’.

‘Bernard is still trying to solve it all and he is still very much a part of the struggle. The struggle goes on, and Bernard is right there at the center of it. It’s gonna be fun,’ he told Deadline.

Westworld season four premieres in the US on Sunday June 26 on HBO.
