A first look teaser of Wednesday Addams in Tim Burton’s new Addams Family spin-off series on Netflix is already sending fans into frenzy.
The sarcastic, miserable, and honestly quite iconic character will be getting her very own live-action show, with Tim, who is behind the likes of Alice in Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas, making his television directing debut.
Scream Queen star Jenna Ortega will be taking over from Christina Ricci who previously played Wednesday, and if the teaser is anything to go by, the upcoming series promises to be as creepy as ever, and fans can’t wait.
Taking to Twitter to share their excitement, one person wrote: ‘I am and always have been a HUGE Addams Family fan. I’m super stoked for this and from what I’ve seen, the casting is great.’
Another penned: ‘Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams is a concept that I am going to be obsessed with,’ while a third wrote: ‘Christina Ricci was a tough act to follow, but this could be it.’
Titled Wednesday, the coming-of-age comedy charts Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorised the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.
The teaser shows Jenna with Wednesday’s notable plaits and black nails, creepily finger-clicking over the spine-tingling music.
Wednesday’s black platform heels and typical glower inspired goth looks and Halloween costumes, and the ‘new twisted series’ will even of course include the notable Adamms Family’s disembodied hand, Thing, making an appearance.
The macabre Addams Family clan was created back in 1938 by cartoonist Charles Addams, and has been brought to both the big and small screens on numerous occasions over the years.
Christina played Wednesday – the child of Morticia (Anjelica Huston) and Gomez (Raul Julia) – in 1991’s The Addams Family and its 1993 sequel Addams Family Values.
She was originally played by Lisa Loring in the sixties sitcom, and most recently was voiced by Chloe Grace Moretz in the 2019 animated comedy The Addams Family, which also featured the voices of Allison Janney, Bette Midler, Charlize Theron and Oscar Isaac.
Although she won’t be playing her original character, or even Morticia, Christina will be returning to the Addams Family universe in a brand new role, which we can’t wait to find out more about.
Netflix confirmed the news on Twitter earlier this year, writing: ‘Yes, it’s true — the magnificent Christina Ricci is joining the cast of the new Wednesday Addams series as an exciting new character *snap snap*.’
The cast also includes Catherine Zeta-Jones as matriarch Morticia, Isaac Ordonez, George Burcea and Luis Guzman as the rest of the Addams clan, and Gwendoline Christie as the school principal.
Netflix’s Teddy Biaselli, director of original series at Netflix, described Wednesday Addams as the ‘ultimate lone wolf’, and explained why the streamer jumped at the chance to host the show, written by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar.
He said: ‘When we first heard Al Gough and Miles Millar’s pitch for Wednesday we were struck, like an arrow from a crossbow, right in our hearts. They nailed the tone, the spirit and the characters, but gave us a fresh way into this story.
‘We then got the call that visionary director and lifelong Addams Family fan Tim Burton wanted to make his television directorial debut with this series.
‘Tim has had a history of telling empowering stories about social outsiders like Edward Scissorhands, Lydia Deitz and Batman. And now he brings his unique vision to Wednesday and her spooky classmates at Nevermore Academy.’
Wednesday is set to launch on Netflix.
