When Killing Eve came to its end with the fourth and final season, fans were left heartbroken.
Villanelle (Jodie Comer) and Eve (Sandra Oh) finally had their romantic moment, with the pair sharing passionate kisses and admitting their feelings after four seasons of sexual tension, yearning looks and some cat and mouse games.
However, it wasn’t long before their romance ended, as Villanelle was shot in the back and the pair were plunged into the Thames, and the series ended.
While fans weren’t too happy about the ending, Killing Eve author Luke Jennings has consoled heartbroken fans with the news that this isn’t the end of Villanelle.
Writing for The Guardian, Luke shared: ‘I learned the outcome of the final episode in advance, and suspected, rightly, that fans would be upset.
‘But to those fans,’ he continued, ‘I would say this: Villanelle lives.
‘And on the page, if not on the screen, she will be back.’
Luke added that ‘the final series ending took [him] aback’, and when he had written the books, he was prepared for a ‘darkly satisfying’ move in which the couple get their happy ending and ‘walk off into the sunset together’.
But it simply wasn’t meant to be on screen.
While he’s hinting at Villanelle’s return in a new book and not on screen, it’s not all over for fans of the TV series as a spin-off series may be in the works.
Killing Eve creators may be planning a prequel series all about Carolyn Martens, the legendary spy and head of the Russia Desk at MI6 played by the truly excellent Fiona Shaw.
Although it’ll be without Villanelle and Eve, the spirit of Killing Eve will nonetheless ‘still live on’.
‘The creators could have gone for Villanelle or Eve, but Carolyn provides a different take on things,’ a source told The Sun.
‘Bosses felt that Killing Eve had to come to an end but its spirit should live on in a new form, and this is the project they’re focusing their efforts on now.’
Speaking about the predicted fan backlash over the finale, showrunner Laura Neal revealed to Metro.co.uk that it would be ‘impossible to please everyone’.
‘I think with a show like this, that generates so much discussion and that also generates so much debate, you’re never going to be able to please everybody,’ she said.
‘And that’s part of what makes the show great as well. I’m braced for us not being able to please everybody but I’m really delighted with the ending. I know our actors are delighted with the ending, and I hope that, even if they don’t agree with it, I hope fans will see how much love we put into the ending.’
Killing Eve is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
