Vikings star Alex Høgh Andersen ‘bawled’ during final scene in season 6 part 2

***Warning: spoilers ahead for Vikings season six part two.***

Vikings star Alex Høgh Andersen has opened up about filming his last scene in the historical drama, describing the emotional moment as ‘beautiful’.

Since 2016, Alex, 26, has portrayed Ivar the Boneless on Vikings, the son of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his second wife Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland).

During the second half of the show’s final series, the ferocious Ivar meets his demise, slain in battle by a soldier as his brother Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) watches, tears brimming in his eyes.

As Ivar falls to the ground, Hvitserk rushes to his side, resting his dying brother’s head on his knees as he takes his last breath.

The scene where Ivar dies was also the last that Alex filmed on the series, which wrapped around two years ago.

Alex said that he ‘kind of designed and choreographed’ the moment with the show’s creator Michael Hirst, explaining that he ‘loved’ that his character was killed by a ‘random’ soldier and that he ended up being ‘afraid’ of dying despite his typically fearsome demeanour.

‘I love the fact that he was afraid in the end,’ he told ET. ‘That was really important to me, that the guy that had been the least human throughout this entire show, showed himself to be absolutely human in his dying breath.’

When the day came to film his last scene, Alex was understandably in a heightened emotional state, recalling: ‘I was bawling my eyes out throughout the entire day.’

He said that it was ‘special’ for his last scene to be shared with his ‘fellow Danish brother’ Marco.

‘Then we do the first take and Marco comes in, rushes in, puts me on his lap, and I look at him and I can just feel his teardrops landing on my forehead and face. And I’m like, “You can’t cry because you’re going to make me cry!”’ Alex said.

‘So I looked at him for one second and I felt those teardrops land on my face, and I was like, “Oh, here we go.” And then we just started bawling while we were doing the line. And it just became very, very beautiful and very organic.’

Alex added that his death scene was ‘one of those moments that you live for as an actor’.
