Trigger Point: Viewers ‘lost for breath’ over bombshell scene in Vicky McClure’s tense new drama amid Line of Duty comparisons
Well, that was a tense first episode of Trigger Point (Picture: ITV)

Trigger Point has been billed as ‘Line of Duty with adverts’ as viewers were left ‘jumping out of their seats’ during the shock closing scene in the tense new drama.

The ITV series, executive produced by LoD writer Jed Mercurio, debuted on Sunday with Vicky McClure and Adrian Lester starring as bomb disposal experts called out to a scene at a London housing estate during a summer heatwave.

*** Warning: MAJOR spoilers for Trigger Point episode 1 ***

Episode one starts in the middle of a summer heatwave when Expo officers Lana Washington (McClure) and Joel Nutkins (Lester) are called out to a Metropolitan Police counterterrorism operation at a London housing estate to investigate a potential bomb factory and a suspected bomb maker, Andy Phelan.

From there, the tension gradually builds as Lana and Joel find themselves at risk of accidentally detonating bombs on more than one occasion.

However, it was a short-lived adventure for Nutkins, who was blown up by an explosive after noticing a bomb hidden in a nearby van.

The tense scenes had viewers on the edge of their seats and holding their breaths, with one tweeting: ‘The ending of #TriggerPoint made me jump, was totally expecting it but still jumped.’

Viewers compared the drama to Vicky McClure’s other series Line of Duty (Picture: ITV)

Another said: ‘Way to ramp up the tension. A very slow burner.’

‘Do t [sic] think I’ve taken a breath in the last 42 mins SO GOOD,’ one tweeted.

One other viewer agreed: ‘#TriggerPoint has literally got me holding my breath. I have to keep remembering to breath.’

Reacting to one gripping moment during the opening scenes – where Lana was left hanging off a light switch for several anxiety-inducing minutes after realising it was a trigger – one viewer quipped: ‘Thank you to #TriggerPoint for now making me scared of my light switch.’

Many others were stoked that Trigger Point was just as tense as Mercurio’s BBC hit Line of Duty, which also starred McClure, with one writing: ‘Wow, wow, wow, what can I say…. Bodyguard and Line of Duty all rolled into one, @jed_mercurio you sir are a GENIUS!!!!!! So good to see @Vicky_McClure doing what she does best as well….Sunday night TV drama is BACK with a bang! (pun intended ).’

‘Loving this, nice little drama to fill the #LineofDuty shaped whole in my life Any drama with Vicky McClure is a drama worth watching,’ one other weighed in.

Trigger Point airs returns next Sunday at 9pm on ITV.
