A trans lady who began transitioning in her 70s when her wife developed Alzheimer’s disease has told her extraordinary experience.
Isobel, 80, received gender-affirming surgery in January of this year, just a few years after coming out publicly as transgender.
Isobel had lived her life pretending to be a cis straight guy, married Margaret and having children with her, but she had secretly been dressed in women’s attire purchased for her by her adoring wife.
Isobel recalled their early days together on Good Morning Britain, saying she ‘had Margaret’s support.’
‘When I was 20, they were still imprisoning homosexuals,’ she said. ‘Trans people weren’t even talked about.’
‘I had the support of a wonderful wife. We were married 60 years,’ Isobel went on, before sadly revealing Margaret was suffering from Alzheimer’s, is living in a nursing home ‘and doesn’t really know me now.’
When her wife’s symptoms of the fatal disease became more severe, Isobel revealed, ‘I thought that if I had to have any type of life without her, I want to become who I want to be.’
‘Whatever makes you happy, sweetie,’ Margaret said.
When presenter Kate Garraway questioned if Isobel had been anxious about coming out to people when she was still caring for Margaret before she moved into the nursing home, she chuckled and said, ‘Yes, but not quite as nervous as I am now.’
The 80-year-old said she has been ‘ever so much happy’ after transitioning and undergoing surgery, adding that her’suicidal inclinations have vanished.’
Several people watching from home were moved by Isobel and Margaret’s tale, and many rushed to social media to express their support.
‘How wonderful… Isobel I’m so glad you’ve had the support of your beautiful wife,’ one person wrote.
Another said they had shed ‘more than a few joyful tears for Isobel on GMB just now… what a bloody lovely, and finally happy, lady. You go girl.’
‘What a joy Isobel is, so please she has found her happiness,’ one said, with another adding the ‘utter joy on her face is so wonderful to see.’
One satisfied viewer commended the ‘compassionate and caring interview’ and Isobel’s ‘touching, personal narrative,’ adding that they hoped it reminded people that ‘there is always a human at the [receiving] end of their hatred.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV and ITVX
