Fans have defended Tom Holland from homophobic reaction after a sex scene in The Crowded Room.
After first garnering negative feedback, The Crowded Room was subsequently hailed for a scene in which Holland’s character Danny muses on the past while being probed about his role in a 1979 New York City shooting.
Danny visits a bar and meets a guy before heading to a bathroom cubicle and having sex.
While the incident sparked outrage on social media, it also inspired bigots to flood Twitter with homophobic slurs.
Others, though, sprang to the Marvel star’s support for every negative comment.
‘It only took Tom Holland doing one gay scene for Twitter to explode into homophobic rants, fragile masculinity & toxic behaviour,’ wrote on fan.
‘People need to find some peace, that hate is pathetic and quite literally killing young men.’
Another agreed: ‘People making homophobic jokes about this need to understand that the hallmark of a good actor is letting yourself be open to new roles that challenge you.
‘Tom Holland has been typecast a lot in his career but I applaud him for taking a risk and doing something different.’
‘The way how y’all are responding to Tom Holland acting in a f**king SHOW is beyond juvenile and homophobic,’ fumed a third, and their cries were thankfully echoed by so many others.
Holland, 27, confessed he was “broken” after filming The Crowded Room and wanted a break from acting.
‘I love the learning curve of becoming a producer. I’m no stranger to hard work. I’ve always sort of lived by this idea that hard work is good work,’ he told Extra.
‘I really enjoyed it, but then again, the show did break me. There did come a time where I was sort of like, “I need to have a break,” I disappeared.’
The Crowded Room is available to stream on Apple TV.
