Tim Robbins has been in some of the most iconic films of all time, but he considers his experience on Apple TV Plus drama Silo to be one of his most memorable.
To mention a few of his blockbusters, the 64-year-old actor appeared in the original Top Gun picture, co-starring with Tom Cruise, before moving on to play imprisoned banker Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption.
Robbins also won an Oscar for best supporting actor and a Golden Globe for his work on Mystic River, and he received another Academy nomination for directing Dead Man Walking.
Silo, a dystopian thriller starring Rashida Jones and Rebecca Ferguson, however, struck a special chord with him, he said ahead of the show’s debut.
Silo, based on Hugh Howey’s novel, follows a residual civilisation living in a gigantic subterranean silo to survive the toxic air outside, with only a video camera providing access to the outside world.
But when the longtime sheriff unexpectedly requests to leave, and those who discover dark secrets about the nature of the silo end up dead, Juliette Nichols (Ferguson) finds herself in a dangerous and gripping search for the truth about the world she thought she knew.
Reflecting on his stint filming Silo, which was shot in the UK, Tim explained: ‘For me, this experience has been one of the better experiences of my career from the top to the bottom: Graham Yost, who is the showrunner, and all of the producers, all the directors, all the writers and all of the actors.
‘It was an easy set to be on. It was very human, very nurturing and very professional, efficient and generous. You couldn’t ask for more, particularly in times like these to work with such a great, great cast and crew.’
What would Tim bring with him if he was transported down to an underground bunker?
‘Pictures of my kids,’ he replied. ‘At first, I’d try to get my kids and if I couldn’t get my kids, I’d get my grandkids.
‘And if I couldn’t get my kids and my grandkids and my loved ones, I’d take pictures to remember them.
That’s a terrible, depressing question. I think we did Silo, at least I did Silo, in the hopes that we never get to a situation that would cause humanity to live underground.’
Silo is available to stream on Apple TV Plus.
