Outraged viewers have reacted angrily to This Morning’s presenters’ disagreement with a singing ban at a theatre.
Alison Hammond, 48, and Dermot O’Leary, 49, were joined by Vanessa Feltz, 61, on Friday’s broadcast of the daytime talk show to discuss the Manchester production of The Bodyguard.
Managers at the northern city’s Palace Theatre have urged audience members not to sing Whitney Houston songs during the concert, and have posted banners demanding that they do so.
Reading from a script, new Great British Bake Off host Alison said that workers are “very, very serious” about the new limitations and are “regularly walking up and down the aisles.”
Dermot burst out laughing and continued to giggle as the former Big Brother contestant spoke, while Vanessa smiled.
‘I can’t believe it. I’d be devastated,’ Alison said of the rules, ‘I’m not even going to go to that show now.’
‘Isn’t the whole purpose of going to a musical that you know that you sing along to all the portions you know and when you don’t know the words you simply make them up?’ Vanessa wondered.
‘Isn’t that what everybody does? And very, very loudly while eating an ice cream.’
Viewers were appalled by the pair’s statements, which were described as “so incredibly stupid” by theatrical actor Alice Fearn, who plays in the musical Wicked.
She continued: ‘Who the hell do they think you are?! I am incredibly disappointed with all of the presenters here.
‘To actually think you have the RIGHT to sing along to a professional production is mind-blowing to me. If you want that… go to karaoke. I’m totally furious.’
Another irate viewer mirrored her feelings, unable to understand why the This Morning hosts found the restriction “so amusing.”
They continued: ‘Absolutely infuriates me when people sing along in the theatre! I want to hear professionals sing, not to be disrupted by someone who thinks it’s karaoke! Even if you can sing, not the time or place! Save it for the shower!’
‘100% I pay to see the performers perform not some random person out of tune (usually). It is disrespectful to those incredible people on the stage! Ppl sing during @JerseyBoysUK even when told not to!’ another remarked.
Many others felt that singing during stage acts is ‘disrespectful’ to both the artists and the audience.
This Morning airs from 10am on weekdays on ITV.
