We’re getting to the peak of summer, which can only mean one thing: Shark Week is here.
The annual seven-day celebration of all things shark returns to Discovery Channel on July 23. This year, Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa, will be in charge of bringing us fun, drama, and “WTF?” documentaries about the creatures that have become the most feared animals on the planet because of a certain Spielberg horror movie from 1975.
Cocaine Sharks comes to us on July 26. It is the appropriate follow-up to the crazy big hit Cocaine Bear, which was based on a true story in a loose way.
Tom “The Blowfish” Hird, a shark expert, is going to the Florida Keys to find out if reports that sharks are high on cocaine are true. This is sure to be one of the most exciting things to see during Shark Week.
What does it mean when sharks and drugs get together? Well, Hird will try to find out about that.
We’ll also be paying close attention to Jaws vs. The Meg during Shark Week. This movie explores an idea that the small great white shark killed off the 50-foot megalodon shark.
Then, Shark vs. Snake: Battle of the Bites will look into why there seem to be so many dead tiger sharks showing up on the beaches of Western Australia, even though there is no evidence of an attack. Are it the fault of dangerous sea snakes?
Momoa said he’s been “begging” to host Shark Week for years, taking over for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who did it last year.
‘We’ve been trying to do it probably since 2018,’ he said.
Speaking to People, he added: ‘I’m hoping Shark Week goes well, and I can do another one, and then another one, and just pass on more information.’
Other highlights include Belly of the Beast: Feeding Frenzy, which tries to find the biggest great white shark ever seen on film, and Air Jaws: Final Frontier, which looks at the huge ocean predators that fly high above the water’s surface.
Shark Week launches July 23 on the Discovery Channel.
