A The Wheel winner has disclosed how the programme was modified for him as a blind competitor.
Toby recently stunned fans by defying the odds to win £45,000 on Michael McIntyre’s famous gameshow.
The player, who was completely blind at the age of 16, was helped in the final round by radio DJ Sara Cox, who assisted him with an art question, later pronouncing his prize money to be “life-changing.”
Toby has now commended the BBC for being accommodating to his disabilities.
To his 241k followers, the TV star went to social media, where he routinely broadcasts films on living as a blind person and deconstructs prejudices.
‘I’ve been asked a lot what the BBC did to make my experience as a blind person much better. Honestly, they were absolutely brilliant,’ he began in a TikTok video.
‘Firstly, they brought in an external member of staff to be my guide for the day, off the set and on the set, and they allowed me to go around the set beforehand to get my bearings.’
Toby continued: ‘They even let my girlfriend come with me, just to make me feel safe, bless them.’
The sportsman and influencer was also full of praise for ‘absolutely wonderful’ presenter Michael.
‘He read out all the questions twice, made sure I knew where all the celebrities were and what topics they had. He even described what was going on while the wheel was moving, which was actually really funny.’
Toby said a ‘big part’ of answering a question under pressure is being able to look at it and take in the possible answers, which he wasn’t able to do.
‘Obviously, I can’t do that but the BBC did offer me a braille question sheet.
‘I don’t read braille, unfortunately, but the thought was really, really sweet.’
He concluded: ‘Massive shoutout to the BBC. They made my day really easy and enjoyable.’
Toby’s unique brand of humour captured everyone’s hearts while on The Wheel.
When entrusted with answering a rugby question with YouTuber Chunkz as his expert, he had the stars in stitches.
Clearly not knowledgable about the sport, the vlogger said: ‘Never watched a game of rugby in my life, never played it…’
Before Toby chimed in: ‘I’ve never watched anything, mate! So it’s all good’, earning a ripple of laughs from the audience.
As for his final question, he correctly answered: ‘Which of these artists has won the Turner Prize in the 21st century?’, which was Grayson Perry.
‘It’s all on you this one,’ Toby told Sara. ‘Because I have no idea.’
‘Blind people don’t like art.’
He stated that he planned to use his prize money to pay off his academic loans and to purchase a new automobile for his fiancée, who had to drive him everywhere.
The Wheel continues Saturday on BBC One.
