After five excruciating episodes starring The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp, The Idol ended this week.
The criticised drama chronicles the complicated connection of a rising popstar (Depp) and her ‘guru’ Tedros (The Weeknd) and was even put out of its misery a week early with a last-minute episode cut.
Every episode provided another excruciating moment that would later go viral, from “the worst sex scene in history” to ill-judged comments about Jeffrey Epstein.
While The Weeknd – actual name Abel Makkonen Tesfaye – is one of the finest vocalists and most popular artists in recent memory, his acting abilities suffered similarly to a Tory politician hosting their own chat show – terrible.
Regardless, the Blinding Lights singer, 33, marked the end of a key period in his career that many of his admirers would rather forget.
Sharing some pictures of The Idol, he captioned the collection of photos: ‘The finale. grateful to share this moment with you all as the season comes to an end.
‘Continue to push the vision no matter how bumpy the journey.’
The response? Well, the number one comment which has so far racked up 18,000 likes and currently sits right below the heartfelt words: ‘Please don’t ever set foot on a movie or TV set ever again.’
Maybe it gets kinder as you scroll down? The next post read: ‘The Weeknd carried this show . . . to the grave.’
OK so you get the jist.
There were some followers who remained loyal to the singer though. One wrote: ‘I enjoyed it , I don’t know what the hate is for honestly,’ while someone else even begged for a season two.
One fan went as far as to call it the ‘best series on earth.’
Depp recently defended The Idol’s controversial sex scenes.
‘I was never interested in making something puritanical,’ she told Vogue Australia.
‘It’s okay if this show isn’t for everyone and that’s fine – I think all the best art is [polarising]. I’ve never felt more respected and more safe on a set, honestly.’
The Idol is available to stream on NOW.
