Max George returned to screens last night in his first TV appearance since the death of his friend and The Wanted bandmate Tom Parker, but suffered an injury during his first race.
Taking part in ITV’s new sports competition The Games with 11 other celebrities, the singer appeared to be clutching his leg and was supported by co-stars after finishing in last place in the men’s 400m, sparking concern from fans who were watching.
However, Max later took to Instagram to reassure fans, saying: ‘Obviously I pulled up earlier, the last few days have been a bit of a rough one.’
He explained: ‘I perforated my eardrum a couple of days ago so it’s been causing me quite a lot of dizziness.
‘I’ve been on loads of pain medications so I think I just got dehydrated but all good, I’ve been rehydrated, I’m in hospital tomorrow to have it checked on and just make sure that everything’s okay, and fingers crossed that I get the nod to be able to do the swimming because that’s an event that I love.
‘Just been a rough couple of days, but there’s a lot of people asking, “Am I alright?”, I’m all good, just a bit shaken with my ear and just got dehydrated.’
He finished: ‘All love and hopefully see you tomorrow.’
The 33-year-old had pulled out of The Games’ promo events last week, after not being ‘in a good space following Tom’s death.’
Tom died last month at the age of 33, after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour in late 2020.
Despite pushing through to participate in the shows, Max limped to the end of his first event yesterday, finishing in last place.
After former Love Islander Wes Nelson was declared winner, with Harry Potter actor Josh Herdman taking second place and former Strictly Come Dancing pro Kevin Clifton finishing third, the show’s commentator said: ‘At the back, limping over the line carrying an injury, Max George.’
Host Holly Willoughby added from the studio: ‘Wow, that was incredibly exciting there, but it did look like Max has picked up some sort of injury, we’ll have an update on that on tomorrow’s show.
‘I hope he’s alright, a fantastic finish, a fantastic race,’ she added.
Max later penned on Twitter: ‘Sorry guys… been a tough few days but will hopefully be back tomorrow.
‘Your support has been amazing… and the signs at the event made my day.
‘Much love and congrats to all the other boys and girls. PS I think meeting Tyson Fury killed me.’
Fans had been sharing their support for the Wanted singer on social media, with one writing: ‘Max George has been through so much the last month, and to see him struggle on The Games was hard.
‘He pushed through that injury like a beast. We love you Max.’
Another wrote: ‘For Max to even be present for this just shows his immeasurable strength and courage, whatever the results we’ll always be forever proud of you and Tom will be too.’
Elsewhere in The Games, the male celebrities competed in a pre-recorded hammer throw event, which was also won by Wes.
All of the contestants were then paired in a mixed-doubles diving competition, with the first of two disciplines being shown yesterday, and the rest to air later this week.
The Games continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
