The Walking Dead’s Melissa McBride has exited the forthcoming spinoff show that was set to focus on Norman Reedus’ character Daryl Dixon and Melissa’s Carol Peletier.
Earlier this month, The Walking Dead aired its last ever episode, in the second of the three arcs that make up the series’ 11 final seasons.
One more eight-episode arc is still to come, following the conclusion of Fear of the Walking Dead’s currently airing season 7.
Of Melissa’s exit, a network spokesperson said: ‘Melissa McBride has given life to one of the most interesting, real, human and popular characters in The Walking Dead Universe.
‘Unfortunately, she is no longer able to participate in the previously announced spinoff focused on the Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier characters, which will be set and filmed in Europe this summer and premiere next year.’
Speaking to TV Line, the spokesperson revealed that the reason Melissa will not feature is due to ‘relocation’ issues.
They said: ‘Relocating to Europe became logistically untenable for Melissa at this time. We know fans will be disappointed by this news, but The Walking Dead Universe continues to grow and expand in interesting ways and we very much hope to see Carol again in the near future.’
Walking Dead’s chief content officer Scott M. Gimple and Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang, who co-created the series, commented on the ending of the television programme.
Speaking at the time, Angela said: ‘It’s bittersweet to bring [the flagship series] to an end.
‘But I could not be more excited to be working with Scott Gimple and AMC to develop a new series for Daryl and Carol.
‘Working with Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride has been a highlight of my career, and I’m thrilled that we get to keep telling stories together.
At the end of March, Norman revealed that he ‘couldn’t wrap his head around’ the show coming to an end.
With the first episode of the post-apocalyptic show having aired in 2010, telling the tale of a world ravaged by bloodthirsty zombies known as ‘walkers’, it’s set to wrap up later this year when the final episodes of season 11 are released.
The Walking Dead executive producer and special make-up effects supervisor Greg Nicotero shared a video on Instagram commemorating the last day of shooting, where he spoke to Norman, who’s played fan-favourite character Daryl Dixon from the start.
As they stood with their arms around one another, Greg said: ‘Last day, 12 years,’ as Norman responded: ‘Love you buddy. Thank you for everything. It’s been a real joy.’
