The Walking Dead’s Andrew Lincoln reunited with his co-stars and joked that quitting the series in 2018 was a ‘terrible decision’.
The 47-year-old star played Rick Grimes in the hit AMC zombie drama for nine seasons, with his character departing the show in mysterious scenes after being whisked off to safety in a helicopter.
Andrew joined the likes of Negan actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Daryl’s Norman Reedus, Michonne’s Danai Gurira and Morgan’s Lennie James for the cast’s virtual reunion fundraiser on Sunday where he reflected on his exit from the main show.
Reflecting on his exit from the main show, Andrew recalled: ‘I didn’t know what the South was.
‘I’d never been to the South. And then I went to Georgia, and I fell in love with this extraordinary city, Atlanta. Living and working in the South was extraordinary.
‘There’s a sort of English attitude about the South – they’re sort of quite patronising at dinner parties. I said, “This the most advanced, civilised, extraordinarily progressive place I’ve ever been in my life”, and that was 12 years ago.’
‘You guys I love,’ he continued, talking about the cast.
‘I mean, the connection that we have to the land, to the place, to the people…
‘Arthur – my 10-year-old son – won’t let me take a job unless it’s in Georgia now! He dismisses it. He goes, “Take me back there!”‘
Andrew added: ‘I came back home for the kids, and now they’re sick of me, and I wish I’d never left. It’s bullsh*t! It was a terrible decision! [laughs].’
The star is set to reprise the role of Rick in a trilogy of films that will reveal what happened to him after his exit.
The Walking Dead returns February 28 on AMC and Fox.
