The Vicar Of Dibley In Lockdown airs the controversial Black Lives Matter segment during tonight’s new special – and fans were delighted to see it.
Ahead of the scene airing, the BBC were already forced to defend the show after online backlash over news of the comedy making the statement.
In the second of the BBC sitcoms new specials, vicar Geraldine (played by Dawn French) was seen walking around the quiet village in the middle of lockdown.
The segment, dated August 23, had Geraldine reflect on her duties as a woman of the cloth – and the obligations she has not just for the parish, but also for the world at large.
Speaking to ‘Owen’ who was holding the camera, she said: ‘This last week, I’ve been thinking about this Black Lives Matter thing, and the horror show that was, the murder of George Floyd.
‘Now this is tricky for us in [Dibley], because we’re not the most diverse community, but I don’t think it matters where you’re from, I think it matters that you do something about it – because Jesus would, wouldn’t he?’
‘Listen, I’m aware that all lives matter, obviously,’ she continued. ‘But until all lives matter the same, we’re doing something very wrong. So I think we need to focus on justice for a huge chunk of our country men and women who seem to have a very bad, weird deal, from the day they’re born.’
Walking over to the parish notice board, she then takes down old posters from the Seventies, and replaces them with a homemade poster that states ‘Black Lives Matter’.
‘I think that in Dibley, perhaps we should be thinking about taking down some of our old notices, like this, and perhaps, we put up one like this instead,’ she concludes.
The segment ends with her taking the knee in front of the noticeboard, looking out over the village.

In the second half of the episode, dated in September, Geraldine pays a poignant goodbye to beloved best friend Alice, who on the show died of cancer three years earlier.
The scenes were to commemorate actress Emma Chambers, who died in 2018.
Breaking down in tears, Dawn continues to channel Geraldine as she said: ‘I believe in eternal life in heaven, but I also believe in eternal life on earth, because those who die are eternally here, alive in our memories, and who we are, because of how they changed us.’
The Vicar Of Dibley In Lockdown continues Monday at 8.20pm on BBC One.
