The Vicar of Dibley Christmas special left viewers divided tonight after Dawn French mentioned some of the former cast members who are no longer with us.
Dawn has returned as our favourite vicar, Geraldine Granger, in the three-part BBC special, titled The Vicar of Dibley in Lockdown.
The new instalments of comedy will track life in the fictional village across 2020 using online sermons conducted by Geraldine.
While the vicar takes the lead throughout the episode, she warmly keeps some of our favourite character’s memories alive in a
heartwarming and comedic way
During the episode, Geraldine paid a tribute to Owen Newitt, who was played by Roger Lloyd-Pack.
Roger sadly died in 2014 from pancreatic cancer.
She also mentioned John Bluthal, who played the character of Frank Pickle in the comedy, although he died in 2018 from natural causes.
Some viewers thought it was ‘odd’ to include the cast members that had died, taking to social media, one tweeted: ‘WTF? Aren’t all the rest of the cast dead now? Seems in poor taste.’
‘It’s so weird seeing this #vicarofdibley thing given how much of the cast is dead, the show was the cast, not just the vicar. Shouting at dead Frank is just odd…,’ another commented.
One added: ‘Are they making jokes out of the dead ones?’
While another said: ‘Owen got more mentions than anyone and Roger Lloyd Pack’s been dead nearly 7 years!’
‘See tons of complaints sorry but why are u making fun of the dead?’ another viewer quizzed.
Other viewers praised Dawn for bringing happiness and joy to 2020, with many saying it was a sweet gesture to include Owen and Frank.
‘The best 10 minutes of TV this year!!,’ one viewer tweeted.
Another commented: ‘Made me smile to see Geraldine back.’
While one added: ‘DAWN FRENCH, the single most funniest human ever!! Thanks for bringing the Vicar back!! Look forward to more Vicar Zooms!’
‘Still brilliantly funny and exactly what we need right now,’ another said.
The Vicar Of Dibley In Lockdown airs on BBC One.
