This news story contains spoilers for episode two of The Undoing.
Nicole Kidman has spoken about the twist-filled second episode of The Undoing, revealing how the cast had a matter of minutes to film key scenes.
The actress stars in the Sky Atlantic series as Grace Fraser, a high-flying therapist whose life is thrown into disarray following the murder of an acquaintance and the disappearance of her husband Jonathan, played by Hugh Grant.
In the second episode, which aired in the US on Sunday and arrives in the UK tonight, Grace and Jonathan are reunited in the most emotional moment of the series so far.
After Jonathan becomes the lead suspect in Elena’s murder, Grace moves to a secluded beach house with son Henry to escape the spotlight. While there, she is reunited with her missing husband, who admits to having an affair with Elena but is adamant he had nothing to do with her death.
Nicole spoke about the pressure of filming the scene under testing circumstances, with the cast given just minutes to capture the scene in the light of dusk during filming in Long Island.
The actress told TV Line: ‘I was pretty strung out by that stage, [just by] the nature of being in a whole series and the emotional journey that Grace goes on.’
She added: ‘It was interesting because it was so palpable. Hugh and I were both strung out. So the idea that there was this clock ticking… we just had to jump in and do it. I am very much a performer who goes, “OK, let’s do it. Let’s capture the magic, if there is any.” And that’s what we had to do in that regard.’
Speaking about harnessing the right emotions for the scene, Nicole said: ‘When someone disappears and there are all of these things that they have done to you — the lies — you have so many questions and there’s so much anger. Your whole life is completely ravaged, but [at the same time]… she is in love with him. So the desire for him to be telling the truth.’
She added: ‘The desire for him to not have done it is the underlying thing with her. To hear him say, ‘I had an affair but I didn’t do it. I did not kill this woman.’… It’s a cataclysmic collision of emotions and intellect.’
The Undoing airs weekly on Mondays at 9pm on Sky Atlantic & NOW TV.
