Netflix revealed in October 2021 that The Umbrella Academy series will be released on the platform in 2022.
The date was teased in a trailer posted on the show’s Netflix page which featured a black and white graphic hinting at the discord between the Sparrow Academy and the Umbrella Academy.
In the graphic, a sparrow flew towards an upside-down umbrella and rested on the handle as a swarm of birds emerged from inside.
Then as another umbrella appeared on screen – this time the right way around – it transformed into a bell that one might come across on a counter at a hotel.
The bell rang as the release date of ‘2022’ flashed underneath and an old-fashioned rectangular frame materialised.
The Umbrella Academy, based on the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way, follows a group of individuals with special abilities who are all born on the same day and adopted by an eccentric billionaire called Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore).
In the season 2 finale, the grown up Hargreeves siblings return to their home in the present day following their adventures in the 1960s, only to discover a different reality to the one they knew.
Not only is their adopted father Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) still alive, but he has formed a different group of superpowered individuals called the Sparrow Academy, which includes their brother Ben (Justin H Min), who in their reality died when he was a teenager.
The Umbrella Academy seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Netflix.
