Things are hotting up on The Sister as the mystery at the heart of it all – who killed Elise (Simone Ashley) – was finally revealed in a tense scene.
Nathan (Russell Tovey) was tormented as Bob (Bertie Carvel) ordered him to move the body and store in a freezer in his lock up.
Still under the impression that he killed Elise when they met on a night out, he struggled with the grim task.
We learned Elise died after hitting her head on the car window during sex with Nathan, following a bad reaction to drugs given to her by Bob.
Bob convinced Nathan to bury her at the time so they would avoid getting into trouble – but in Wednesday’s episode he discovered the real reason behind Bob’s actions.
As the men met at Bob’s house, the lanky-haired ghost-hunter confessed he was responsible for Elise’s death.
Given how weird the guy is, this wasn’t a surprise to many viewers. What was more shocking was his reason for murdering her.
Bob, obsessed with the paranormal, wanted to ensure Elise died that night to ‘create’ a ghost that would haunt the woodland where she was killed.
This bizarre motive was just right for spooky season, but it was a twist no one saw coming.
Reaction on Twitter came thick and fast as the ending left people reeling.
He explained that according to folklore, if a young woman died by the roadside after sex and was buried on ‘unhallowed ground’, she would materialise as ‘a lost young woman, seeking help.’
He went on: ‘It was perfect. The dark woods, the running water, lover’s lane, the young woman, the sex. It was all there. How can I not grasp an opportunity like that?
‘I was sure that if Elise died in that place under those circumstances, the result would be a haunting so, I nudged things along. ‘
A horrified Nathan replied: ‘You did it. She died and you killed her, do you have any idea what you’ve done to us all?’
There’s still one more episode to go, and with a bombshell like that coming in the penultimate instalment, who know how they’ll wrap this one up…
The Sister continues Thursday at 9pm on ITV.
