The Princess: HBO releases first look trailer for ‘intensely emotional’ new Princess Diana film

HBO has released an official trailer for a new documentary on Princess Diana, set for release just days before the 25th anniversary of her death next month.

Princess Diana is still one of the most adored names in the modern Royal Family, even more than two decades after she tragically died in a car crash.

But the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry, who died aged just 36, was subject to intense media scrutiny throughout her relationship with Prince Charles, which is set to be explored in a new documentary.

The one-off will explore Diana’s complex relationship with the media and her romance with the Duke of Wales, including their marriage through to their infamous split in 1992.

The film will show how the paparazzi frenzy contributed to Diana’s death back in 1997.

The trailer begins with the pair’s famous engagement interview, where they’re asked about their first impressions of each other.

Prince Charles told the cameras: ‘I remember thinking what a very jolly and amusing and attractive 16-year-old she was.

He put the attention back on Diana, by asking ‘I don’t know what you thought of me…’ before she replied: ‘Pretty amazing.’

As the teaser trailer goes on, a voice is heard saying: ‘I think we’ve got an unhealthy obsession, and I think she’s very close to being a monster.’

Another shares: ‘When you put a modern person in an ancient institution, they will be destroyed.’

Other footage shown in the trailer includes Prince Charles realising he’s ‘taking second place’, with multiple scenes depicting the late princess being chased by paparazzi and the media.

Describing the ‘intensely emotional’ film, HBO shared: The Princess is a visceral submersion into Diana’s life in the constant and often intrusive glare of the media spotlight.

‘The film unfolds as if it were in the present, allowing viewers to experience the overwhelming adoration, but also intense scrutiny of Diana’s every move and the constant judgment of her character.’

Viewers will see the story told solidly through archival material, adding: ‘The film is also a reflection of society at the time, revealing the public’s own preoccupations, fears, aspirations and desires.’

The Princess will premiere on August 13 on HBO and HBO Max.
