Comedy legend Mike Myers has returned to our screens with a bang with his new Netflix show The Pentaverate.
The wacky show featured some absolute chaos when it hit screens in May 2022, with Mike playing not one, not two, but eight characters throughout.
Of course, with massive, ironic roles – everything from Shrek to Austin Powers – under his belt, Mike is more than able to handle it.
The cast of Mike’s series also includes some other massive names in comedy, including Keegan-Michael Key and Ken Jeong, as well as It’s A Sin star Lydia West.
The Penteverate comes in the form of six 30-minute episodes, and follows Mike playing a journalist who undergoes a mission to uncover hidden secrets and save the world.
But as promising as the show sounds, audiences have some questions about the show – namely, what does The Penteverate even mean?
What does Pentaverate mean?
The Pentevarate is a comedy series shrouded in mystery, following a journalist who is trying to uncover the world’s deepest secrets.
It heavily features some of the world’s most infamous conspiracy theories, and the title of the show reflects this.
In the series, The Pentaverate is an Illuminati-type secret society, founded in 1347 when five men realised what was actually causing the Black Plague.
They began the secret group to influence humanity for what they believe is the greater good, and are made up of five of the most influential and powerful people on the planet.
As for the name of the group, the roots can be traced to Latin: Penta means Five, and Vera means Truth.
So, the Pentaverate literally means the five truth – and the five members are the only ones who know the real truth.
What is the show about?
The Pentaverate asks the question: ‘What if a secret society of five men – aka The Pentaverate – has been working to influence world events for the greater good since the Black Plague of 1347?’
Mike Myers plays eight of the lead roles, the first being Canadian journalist Ken Scarborough, whose mission is to expose the Pentaverate, win his job back and save the world.
He also plays several conspiracy theorists, a Pentaverate member, a media mogul, Russian oligarch and more.
Who is in the cast?
As well as Mike Myers’ multiple characters, there are plenty of talents elsewhere in the cast, from It’s A Sin’s Lydia West to Key and Peele’s Michael-Keegan Key.
Mike Myers plays:
- Anthony Lansdowne: a conspiracy theorist who is also set on exposing the Pentaverate.
- Ken Scarborough: a journalist who takes on the mission to uncover the Pentaverate and save the world
- Rex Smith: another conspiracy theorist and a far-right radio host
- Lord Lordington: the oldest and highest-ranking (the clue’s in the name!) member of the Pentaverate
- Bruce Baldwin: an ex-media mogul
- Mishu Ivanov: an ex-Russian oligarch
- Shep Gordon: a former Rock’N’Roll manager
- and finally, Jason Eccleston: the tech genius behind the invention of MENTOR, the Pentaverate’s super computer
Crazy Rich Asians and The Hangover star Ken Jeong plays Skip Cho, while AUstin Powers star Neil Mullarkey plays Mustache Man.
The cast also includes Friends From College star Keegan-Michael Key and Ab Fab’s Jennifer Saunders.
Rising star Lydia West, best known for her role in Channel 4’s devastating It’s A Sin, will also feature in the series.
The Pentaverate is streaming on Netflix now.
