The O.C. fans fell in love with Ben McKenzie as Ryan Atwood but it turns out one of Hollywood’s biggest names was also in the running for the part.
Over 17 years after the hit series premiered, it’s now been revealed that Wonder Woman star Chris Pine was up for the role – but missed out on the part because he had ‘bad skin’.
Yep, you read that right!
The show’s casting director Patrick Rush revealed the trivia during a chat with former stars Rachel Bilson and Melinda Clarke in their podcast, Welcome to the OC, Bitches!
Recalling the list of stars who had auditioned for the part, Patrick stated: ‘We saw Garett Hedlund for that part and we wanted to test him but he got Troy, the Brad Pitt movie, at the same time that we wanted to test him.
‘We saw Chris Pine, he was really really really good but – this is painful. At the time Chris Pine’s skin was really really bad and that broke my heart because I was a kid with acne. I remember thinking he was so good.’

He added: ‘There were a lot of kids kicking around auditions at the time, [This Is Us star] Justin Hartley auditioned too.’
We’re gutted to hear Chris missed out on a role due to something like acne but we can all agree everything worked out exactly how it was meant to for the Star Trek actor.
Patrick also explained how Ben instantly became the firm favorite for the role after he auditioned for the job.

The casting director – who also worked on Supernatural, Marvel’s Runaways and Chuck – explained: ‘Ryan was a really hard role to cast because he had to be everything, the bad boy but still sexy and also have an edge but also fit into this world. That was the role that was the last one we got done out of the series regulars.
‘Ben came to me from Warner Brothers from another pilot he was testing for that he wasn’t going to get. I remember showing up for the audition and there was this kid outside and I hadn’t met him, didn’t know him, and as I walked past him I was like ‘please let this be that kid’. That is Ryan. He just looked like him.’

He laughed: ‘I said hello and he was not warm and cuddly, which was what Ryan wasn’t! He came in and he was just so prepared. I remember my heart opened when he did it.’
Patrick also confirmed that Peter Gallagher and Mischa Barton were the first actors cast in their roles as Sandy Cohen and Marissa Cooper.
However, there was a time when Olivia Wilde and Kate Mara had been in the running for Marissa.
As The O.C. fans are aware, Olivia did manage to star in the series in the end after she bagged the role of Alex Kelly.Original article published here.
