The nominations for the Bafta TV Awards 2023 are officially in, and while shows like This Is Going To Hurt and The Responder top the way with six nods apiece, many cherished shows and personalities have been left out.
Meanwhile, Bad Sisters, The English, and Slow Horses have all gotten five nominations, while Daisy May Cooper’s Am I Being Unreasonable? and Big Boys have four.
While Imelda Staunton is nominated for leading actress for Netflix’s The Crown, which also has five nominations, including Salim Daw as supporting actor and categories for costume design, editing: fiction, and sound: fiction, Elizabeth Debicki’s portrayal of Princess Diana, as well as Helena Bonham Carter’s portrayal of Princess Margaret, have been overlooked.
Keeley Hawes, who appeared in The Midwich Cuckoos and the BBC drama Crossfire, is another actress who has been missed.
She was also absent from last year’s 11 It’s A Sin nominations, and the second omission hasn’t gone ignored, with one person asking: ‘When is bafta going to give Keeley Hawes the attention she deserves’.
Another show that looks to have been’snubbed’ is Happy Valley, which returned for a third season earlier this year, explaining why it hasn’t been included in the 2023 nominees, which include actors from 2022.
In other news, while Alice Oseman was nominated for Heartstopper in the writer: drama category, Kit Connor and Joe Locke were overlooked, as was the Netflix series itself, despite receiving a National Television Award nomination for best new drama.
On the reality side, Love Island has fallen short again again, despite the 2022 season’ outstanding moments, like as Andrew Le Page’s X-rated confession and Davide Sanclimenti’s classic phrase.
Gogglebox and Channel 4’s Married At First Sight both lost out on nominations for reality and constructed factual series last year.
While Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and Wednesday are both nominated for foreign awards, Stranger Things has been passed over.
The White Lotus and Pachinko are both featured in the category, though Jennifer Coolidge does not receive a notable nomination for her work in the former, and House of the Dragon, which was a highlight for many in 2022, is also overlooked.
Coverage of Ukraine and Susanna Reid’s interview with Boris Johnson on Good Morning Britain also receive nods, though Huw Edwards, who was widely praised for his reporting on the Queen’s death, is absent, though the funeral has been nominated for live event, alongside the Concert for Ukraine and the Platinum Jubilee.
And, perhaps most surprisingly, our queen of television Alison Hammond, who was just confirmed as the next presenter of The Great British Bake Off and hosted the Baftas, was not nominated for her performance in the entertainment category last year.
The Bafta TV Awards takes place on Sunday, May 14 on on BBC One and iPlayer at 7pm.
