The costume designer for The Masked Singer UK has shared the clues that viewers should look out for when watching Panda, Traffic Cone and Rockhopper to perform in the 2022 series… and trust us, we’re going to have our magnifying glasses out tonight.

Last week, Pat Cash became the latest celebrity to be unmasked when Bagpipes was voted out of the competition, having landed in the sing-off against Poodle.

Contestants including Robobunny, Firework and Mushroom are also still in the running to win the series, as the panel of judges and viewers at home try to guess who the celebrities are behind the masks.

Metro.co.uk recently caught up with Tim Simpson, the costumer designer for the ITV programme and managing director of Plunge Creations, who shed some light on the details audiences should be paying close attention to, as well as the one singer who had an especially significant input on their costume’s design.

Fans might have spotted that Panda’s costume – who is dressed like a Scout – features various badges, just like a Scout would earn for their various activities and expeditions.

They do mean something – but Tim isn’t privy to their significance, as the costume design team are simply told what to create, such as a badge featuring an image of a campfire, he said.

One singer that viewers might be surprised to learn has clues dotted on their costume is Traffic Cone, who boasts one of the most simple-looking outfits on the stage this year.

So how on earth can Traffic Cone’s costume actually be designed with hidden clues?

‘During the series, we make various changes to Traffic Cone, various adornments,’ Tim outlined.

‘Because Traffic Cone’s so plain and frankly weird looking, it was necessary to add extras, and sometimes they’re to do with the song and sometimes they’re to do with the performer, but again, there’s only a select group of people who actually know what the clues are.’

We’re going to be keeping an especially close eye on Traffic Cone now, that’s for sure!

There have been various guesses flying about regarding the identity of Rockhopper, from Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon to Spider-Man: No Way Home star Zendaya.

Some people may have noticed that there are Roman numerals on the back of Rockhopper’s costume – although Tim admitted that he ‘wasn’t in on the discussion’ when that particular feature was chosen.

Nonetheless, there is speculation that they could point towards Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams, as the numerals count up to the number 47 – which could be in relation to the fact that she performed with Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland during the half-time show for the 47th Super Bowl in 2013.

The secrets surrounding the identities of the stars of The Masked Singer are kept so guarded that even those who design the costumes don’t know who they are.

However, an exception was made this year, as the performer masquerading as Mushroom was brought in to help finalise the design for their ensemble, Tim revealed.

‘We went through loads of different iterations for Mushroom,’ he recalled. ‘I had an idea of it being one type of mushroom, and then the production team wanted it to look like another mushroom.’

In the end, they decided to let the singer have the final say.

‘The performer was like, “Well if I’m going to be Mushroom, I want this type of mushroom,” and they actually had quite an input into the Mushroom costume, which was nice. It was one of the rare occasions where I get to find out who’s actually going to be in the costume beforehand,’ Tim said.

He recollected how the singer wanted the costume to have a ‘real sense of being natural and from the woodland and earthy and connected with the mycelium under the ground and so I think that was very much the driving force behind Mushroom’.

The costume would have looked extremely different had they gone with Tim’s initial idea, which he described as being ‘sillier’ – as he added that he believes the final product with the performer’s input was a ‘better’ route to go down.

The Masked Singer airs tonight at 7pm on ITV.
