The Ipcress File is the newest thriller series guaranteed to have us at the edge of our seats in the evenings.
ITV’s new thriller boasts some big names in its cast, including Joe Cole of Peaky Blinders fame, the new series of which just started on ITV this week.
Along with Joe, The Ipcress File stars Sing Street favourite Lucy Boynton, and Pride & Prejudice actor Tom Hollander.
The eagerly-anticipated drama, from Bafta-winning writer John Hodge, starts on Sunday, March 6 on ITV, and will air over six parts.
But while this series is brand-new, the espionage thriller, set in Berlin in 1963, sounds very familiar, especially to fans of Sir Michael Caine.
So, is ITV’s The Ipcress File a remake?
Is The Ipcress File a remake?
The Ipcress File is a remake of the hugely popular 1965 film of the same name.
Starring Michael Caine as the lead, it tells the story of British army sergeant Harry Palmer, based in Berlin during the Cold War, who ends up in a military jail in England.
He is offered his escape from prison on the grounds that he becomes a spy and helps solve The Ipcress File case, where a British nuclear scientist has been kidnapped by a man known to Harry.
The film, itself based on the 1962 novel of the same name by author Len Deighton, is seen as sort of ‘anti-James Bond’ film, as it rips away the glamour and class of the 007 espionage films to make way for a fairly gritty and morbid spy thriller.
That said, it remains a cult classic, and is included on the British Film Institute’s BFI 100, of the best British films of the 20th century.
It remains to be seen if the ITV series will stick resolutely to the original film and novel, or if it will flip some parts on its head – we’ll have to wait and see.
