The iconic yellow car from The Inbetweeners that Jay (James Buckley) hung out the window from shouting ‘bus w*****s’ has sold for £15,000 at auction after going under the hammer.

In the fourth episode of series two of E4’s The Inbetweeners, Jay memorably yells the unforgettable phrase at a group of people waiting at a bus stop while in the passenger seat of Simon’s (Joe Thomas) 1996 Fiat Cinquecento.

However, seconds later they end up in a traffic jam, resulting in one of the men from the bus stop coming over and throttling Simon through the window while he apologises profusely, with Will (Simon Bird) and Neil (Blake Harrison) sitting in the backseats.

12 years after the episode aired, the retro vehicle has sold for an impressive amount to a private collector from the USA at East Bristol Auctions.

Auctioneer Andrew Stowe said that the buyer is a ‘big fan’ of the show.

He explained that the auction winner had to fend off competition from around the world from people fond of the programme, which aired for three series between 2008 and 2010, followed by a film in 2011 and a sequel in 2014.

‘The bidding was fierce and we had interest from all over the world – America, Canada, and even Australia,’ Andrew said.

‘Everyone wanted a piece of it. We were quite overwhelmed by how popular it was.’

Andrew said that the demand for the show just demonstrates how widely popular The Inbetweeners is.

‘It just goes to show the popularity of the programme – this is the Batmobile of British Comedy,’ he said.

Simon’s car goes through the wars on The Inbetweeners, after being given to the character by his dad Alan (Martin Trenaman) in the third episode of series one.

In the episode, the gang head to Thorpe Park for a day out, where Jay accidentally ends up causing a door on the vehicle to be ripped off.

Last month, Blake urged fans to stop shouting ‘bus w****r’, saying that he felt bad about the rise in people being blasted by the derogatory phrase while waiting at bus stops.

‘I kind of rather people didn’t do that. It doesn’t feel like the nicest or the best thing in the world to have contributed to,’ he admitted while speaking on the Distraction Pieces podcast.

The Inbetweeners is available to watch on All 4 and Amazon Prime Video.
