The Frasier episode banned from early mornings on Channel 4

You’d think that after years of airing daily in the UK, we’d have seen every single morsel of Frasier from the archives, but it turns out that one specific episode has been ‘blocked’ on Channel 4.

The critically acclaimed comedy, starring Kelsey Grammer in the title character, began in 1993 and has remained a television mainstay ever since.

The original sitcom, a spin-off of Cheers, lasted for 11 seasons before being cancelled in 2004, with a revival airing at the end of last year.

It presently airs on weekday mornings in the UK, although fans have noticed that the season 11 episode, High Holidays, is always missed without warning.

In the episode in issue, Niles (David Hyde Pierce) is disappointed that he did not rebel as a teenager and buys a cannabis brownie to compensate.

However, his father, Martin (John Mahoney), unintentionally consumes the dessert before replacing it with a regular brownie, unknowingly becoming stoned in the process.

Niles arrives at Frasier’s flat, believing he’s high on drugs but actually completely sober, and seeks to let free and enjoy the’munchies’ – and the’sweet nectar of rebellion’.

Instead, he finds a perplexed Martin, who goes crazy plundering the food cabinet and making ‘fridge pants’.

Connecting the links, it’s up to the radio psychiatrist to put a stop to the hijinks by sending his father to bed and informing his brother that he is not high.

Channel 4 has not revealed the reason for the suspension, however it might be due to scenes portraying drug usage.

The episode has become a fan favourite, however some have expressed perplexity as to why it does not show on a regular basis in the UK but is available for streaming on demand.

Taking to the program’s dedicated Reddit page, Eppinizer fumed: ‘I would have never imagined that Frasier of all shows would be censored.’

OK_Cranberry shared: ‘They never show the pot brownies one. Not seen that one for a long time.’

Stirccrazed suggested: ‘They don’t usually show High holidays – the one where Freddie is a goth. Probably not allowed with the drug references at that time in the morning.

‘But, they’ve got the whole series on All4 (or whatever they’re calling it now), so you could use that to fill in your gaps.’

‘I saw the episode this week for the first time. It did surprise me that I’d found a rare unwatched episode but now I wonder if it just wasn’t there and available before. Channel 4, U.K,’ DogTakeMeForAWalk added.

Kelsey Grammer recently reprised his role as Frasier Crane (Picture: NBC)

Frasier stopped after 11 years and 37 Emmy victories in May 2004, but Kelsey returned to the character at the end of last year for a contentious relaunch.

Despite some bad reviews, the Simpsons legend admitted that he felt ‘vindicated’ when it was revealed that the show had been renewed for a second season.

‘It feels great, it feels great,’ he recently told People Magazine of the news. ‘There was a sense of, I’m trying to think of the right word, vindication.

‘In my heart, I thought, “I know we can do this and I know we can do it really well.” And I didn’t want to do what some of the other shows had done, sort of come back and be the same show. I thought this all played exactly how it was meant to be.

‘And Frasier’s still alive, and he has a new story to tell and a new series of people to do it with, and it’s been fantastic.’
