The Crown season 4 bosses reveal they made up Princess Diana singing scene to ‘break viewers’ hearts’

Producers of The Crown have revealed that they dramatised Princess Diana’s singing scene in season four to ‘break viewers’ hearts’, it’s been reported.

During the Netflix drama, there is a poignant moment where Princess Diana sings a song to Prince Charles as a wedding anniversary present.

In season four, The late Princess of Wales, who is played by Emma Corrin, can be seen singing All I Ask Of You from Phantom Of The Opera with an orchestra on a West End stage.

In the episode titled Avalanche, Diana surprises Charles (Josh O’Connor) with a VHS recording of the performance.

It is shown to Charles after Diana performs a duet to Uptown Girl in honour of his birthday at the theatre.

Jessica Hobbs, who directed that particular episode explained that while Princess Diana did perform a dance routine from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical – she didn’t sing.

According to The Telegraph, Jessica said in The Crown’s podcast, that they made the decision for Emma to sing in that scene because her voice would ‘break viewers’ hearts’.

‘Our understanding was that she’d done a dance for him that was filmed on stage, in the costumes, on the real set. That’s what we understood from the research. So we extended that to her singing,’ Jessica told the news outlet.

Annie Sulzberger, the show’s head of research, added: ‘When we found out that Emma could sing we thought, “Ok, even if Diana wasn’t the best singer in the world and would have preferred to dance this, we don’t know. We have never seen the video”.

‘Let’s have her sing it because it’s going to break our hearts, right?’.

Season four of The Crown also features the royal couple’s wedding and Diana’s secret battle with bulimia.

Actress Emma has previously spoken out about the pressure she felt to play Princess Diana.

‘At first there was a huge amount of pressure, but I think it was as soon as I got the script I realised this is Peter’s [show writer Peter Morgan] world we’re creating and our versions of the characters,’ she said last month on The One Show.

‘That really helped to make me not feel as nervous or as much pressure as I did.’

The Crown is available to watch on Netflix.
