Marnie Swindells, the Apprentice winner, has revealed a rather wicked joke she told Lord Alan Sugar in the boardroom that didn’t make the cut… and he seemed less than amused.
Last night, it was revealed that Marnie will receive Lord Sugar’s £250,000 investment for her business, a boxing gym called BRONX that attempts to attract people with its community spirit and slick look.
After learning she had won the BBC competition for 2023 over the phone, the entrepreneur spoke to Metro.co.uk about her experience during the show.
One memorable instance of the immersive experience task was when she played the role of a teacher in a Victorian classroom.
As fans may recall (and it’s difficult to forget), Marnie ended up beating her Apprentice co-star Avi Sharma in front of their guests, branding him a “bad boy.”
The winner recalled the ‘wonderful’ and ‘unforgettable’ moments she had on the program, adding that one particular encounter she had with Lord Sugar concerning her fictional character ‘didn’t make the edit’.
‘I did say in the boardroom to Lord Sugar, “I’m a lady and I’m still looking for a lord,”’ she confessed.
‘The candidates burst out laughing straight away. Lord Sugar looks a bit more straight-faced so I swiftly moved on.’
The business titan didn’t seem to appreciate the lighthearted remark.
Lord Sugar’s questioning of Avi over the spanking moment did make it into the final episode, as he asked in the boardroom: ‘You started off in a school-teacher manner, demonstrating how you get the cane if you’re a naughty boy, is that right?’
‘Yes Lord Sugar you’re right, I did receive a whipping,’ Avi responded.
Baroness Karren Brady then asked: ‘Did you enjoy it?’
‘I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy it,’ the Apprentice contestant admitted, sparking laughter in the room. ‘I think what was most important was the guests found it very entertaining.’
Lord Sugar chimed in to add: ‘I would have, watching you getting whacked!’
Marnie said to Metro.co.uk that she didn’t believe she’d won until she received a phone call from Lord Sugar confirming the outcome.
‘Lord Sugar does let us know after who he decides to go with, so it was difficult and we were left in suspense for a little while. I really didn’t think that it was going my way,’ she said.
‘I remember that morning that we found out thinking, “Just put me out of my misery. I know I didn’t win.” Then he gave me the shock of my life and said I had, so I also had to process that and try and deal with that feeling that I’d had that I hadn’t, and then I had, and it was a lot.’
The Apprentice is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
